Engine timing

I want to experiment a little with the initial timing on my '90 2.9l. To time the engine, what plug and where is it located that is supposed to disconnected to set the timing? Also, has anyone tried a little less timing than stock 10 degrees for a little more low end power, or will the computer negate any changes to the initial timing anyway? Mine is a 5 speed with 235 tires and 3.73 gears, would like a little more low end torque - changing to 4.11's isn't gonna happen!!

Front passengers side is the #1 plug, to get base you'll need to pull the spout connector, it's in a wiring harness close to the distributor.

I don't think that will help with power.
