Distributor Removal

Hi! This is my first post hope someone can help. I went to remove the
distributor in a F600 with a 332H , it would lift up but would not come
all the way out. Should the drive that goes to the oil pump slip out of
the dist. and now that it didn't do I have a problem. Removing the heads
but I do not want to drop anything and have to pull the oil pan.

It has been years since I have worked on a Ford and that was a neighbors
69 CJ .I don't rember any trouble with the dist. or anything special that
I needed to do to remove it. I never had to do anything other than tune
ups on the fords that I have owned since 1963. Anyone have a idea
I am doing wrong?

They can be sticky from what I've heard, but the oil shaft is supposed to stay in the motor, it is a hex shaft that "plugs" into a socket at the bottom of the distributor shaft. Now I'm baseing this info on an FE... I don't know if the FT is a little different? Some times the oil pump shaft will drop down into the pan.. but most people will just go buy a new shaft, instead of dropping the pan.

Thankyou for the information,I will try and hold on to the hex shaft ,slide
it out of the dist. shaft and place it back where it belongs without dropping
it into the pan. The good thing is that if I do drop it I will not have to pull
the pan.

Ya same thing happened to me in my 390. The oil pump shaft came out. I just used some silicone to hold it into place in the distributor and carefully put the distributor back in.

Found out that the oil pump shaft needed to be replaced and that is y
it hung up in the dist . Pulled the pan and oil pump to replace the shaft
and the clip & just to see if anything else was needed. Engine is very
clean for being 30 years old and except for the heads is in good shape.
Reconditioned heads replaced in 95 , what we found some intake and
head bolts loose and #3 cyl intake port gasket was pushed up ,I still
can not see how this was done . # 3 showed oil and the exaust valve
seat may need to be replaced, the rest of need a valve job. Thanks
for the help .
