I'm assuming he got a P0401 code which is the most common.
The usual fix is to replace the DPFE sensor which is very easy.
Ford extended the warranty on them because it's such a common problem so you might want to call your dealer and ask them about it.
It was indeed the DPFE sensor and my local Ford dealership replaced it at no cost. The warranty was extended to 5 years or 60000 miles.
