I just bought a 2001 f350 psd. It has an auto meter ford factory computer in it ( the type that mounts in the cab by the floor). I have read the manual on it and have tried it a couple of times, but for what I do I am not sure if I will ever use it. What are they good for, if I cant justify using it I may consider selling it. thanks
It is used to idle the engine up. It is useful in the winter to help warm the truck up and in the summer to help keep the A/C cool. They also say it is also good to use it when prolonging idle time to help prevent wet stacking supposedly. They may be other uses I am not aware of, someone else maybe will jump in.
You are right to an extent, the controller is used to control engine idle for extended periods of time to maintain a good electrical system voltage, but is also used to hold the idle speed at a specific RPM for use with a power take-off (PTO) unit. Look Here for info on PTO units for our F-Series trucks.
I will trade it for a superchips microtuner, how does that sound, I am not sure what this computer thing is worth I will check with my local ford dealer.
