I have a 1998 Ford Explorer that randomly hesitates when accelerating from a stop. I notice more often when accelerating into a left hand turn. This problem is only seen a few times a month, but serious enough in that the fuel injection seems to hit a flat spot for a split second in which it looses power, then regains itself and resumes to accelerate. I have had this problem since buying the truck new in 1998 but didn't pursue repeated service because of the random nature of the problem (I had a dealership look for this problem when it first happened, and they replaced the fuel control CPU. Has anyone else seen this problem?
We haven't seen it in our shop, but I understand there is a Ford service message about it. It says an intermittent hesitation on acceleration or while turning may be caused by fuel system aeration/pump cavitation. If all the electrical stuff checks out OK, then the fuel pump assembly is replaced with a new design. Good luck.
Hesitation was a very common complaint on the Ford Explorer Newsgroup with '97-'99 SOHC V6 equipped Explorers. Ford issued a TSB last summer. Their explanation was that the transmission will sometimes stay in 4th or 5th gear when decelerating from higher speeds (45-65 MPH) creating a lack of power on acceleration. The fix was having the PCM reprogrammed. It is covered under the emissions warranty (5yr/60K miles). I had my '97 reprogrammed last summer and haven't had the hesitation since. Mine had done it probably 10 times in the first two years I have owned it and almost every time when turning left.
