'94 Explorer pinging

I've seen some posts on this problem (pinging/knocking under load). One suggested solution was to clean the M.A.F. sensor. Can anyone advise on the location of this and best method for cleaning?

Thanks in advance.

don't try to clean it replace it .It is very easy to contaminate the maf sensor I have never seen anyone try to clean one I don't even think thats possible. Are you sure this couldn't be a carbon build up problem this isn't unusual for engine with higher miles . You should try to get a code out of the pcm before you start suspecting things You will save time and money by good diagnosis.

I had the same problem with my 92 4.0 Litre. The engine would ping when in overdrive cruising at about 80 to 90 Km/hr. What i did at first was modified a spare crankshaft position sensor and adjusted the timing a little bit. Then one day on the way to work the truck began unlocking and locking the torque converter then the check engine light came on. After the light came on the truck would not lock up the torque converter at all. I ran the test codes and found the throttle position sensor was faulty. I replaced the TPS and the crank sensor and everything went back to normal, the torque converter began working properly and the pinging was gone. I never touched the MAF sensor and haven't even thought of cleaning it as the MAF is the original with almost 300,000 Km. on the truck. I would suggest running the test codes and see what the computer says, and even for the price of a new TPS I would even suggest changing it for piece of mind.

You can clean the MAF, it's often a cause of pinging. Other things to look for include a bad EGR (if you have one) and vacuum leaks, including the lower intake manifold. Follow the link below, there's lots of good information, including a procedure for cleaning the MAF with pictures.

Exactly. Replacing will cost you over $100. Get a good can of carb/brake cleaner, take the maf off of the air tube, and spray the two 'filaments' (they look like light bulb filaments). Give them about 10 to 30 min to dry (dont touch them or get any dirt in the hole where the MAF sits) then replace.

I had some oil on mine from my K&N which was triggering the Check Engine light. This fixed and the idle even feels smoother. 92K and going strong!!!!!

I used carborator cleaner to spray the Mass Air Flow sensor. For 3.49 it was the cheapest fix of my life. The toughest part is finding the right tool to get the M.A.F. out. There is a small little wire that connects between two posts. Ever since I used the carb cleaner the truck has been running like a charm.
