I would have thought that too but.... To get more power out of a given engine you need more heat. The higher combustion temps lead to the formation of oxides of nitrogen NOx, a major component of smog. A finely tuned high performance engine can probalby get better mileage and less HC (unburned fuel) emissions than a stocker. But its NOx emissions may be increased because of the higher combustion chamber temps.

It's always a balancing act. You can reduce HC (hydrocarbon) emissions by leaning out the mixture and the engine will run better. But as you lean the mixture out your NOx emissions go up as the combustion temp goes up. 'Course if you lean it out too much you end up with burnt valves.

I was wrong, it's 1975 and earlier vehicles that are exempt from emissions testing in CA.

Electric fans, second thoughts.

Guys, I'm starting to regret the electric fan setup.

ALmost every week I have some other failure related to the fans. bad connection, blown fuse, melted fuse housing...

I'm used to building high power car audio, so it's not like I'm an eletronics novice.

But when these fans don't come on...thats' bad. And trouble shooting a connection on a hot, running motor is no fun.

At this point, who cares about the stupid 5 HP savings.

Are the flex fans a good solution?

I'd go with a clutch fan, that's what I run on the CJ.

Used to run a flex fan but got tired of all the noise it made and cutting my hands on the blades, they're sharp suckers! Plus I've heard of a few flying apart.

I believe the clutch fan will give you better mileage than the flex too, at least that's what I've heard in the '67-'72 forum.

Make sure you run a shroud with whatever you end up with.

Or, make sure the fan is very close - which I don't like

I'd advise a clutch fan as well, over the flex. I'd ask if you were running heavy enough gauge wire, relay, etc. for you fan but since it sounds like your up on all that stuff...

You know, I've been running electric for years and haven't had problem one...and thats using junkyard components. Thats it! Your spending too much money on your high $$$ components, you just need to go cheap!

Sorry, your wife made me say that.

I'm starting to think there's somthing to that! I've had better success with a lot of cheaper components in the past. This project has a lot of money thrown at it, and it seems only to have created headaches :-( I should have stuck with the basic running 69/390 I had, and bought 1000 lap-dances instead :- )

the tunes however, sound pretty good :-)

But think how much you've learned through trial and error!

Seriously though, I've learned the most when things didn't work out and I had to figure out A) what happened, B) how to fix it, and C) how to keep it from happening again. At this point you should be reaching Yoda stage

Besides, 1000 lap dances would be cool and all, but in the morning all you'd have to show for your $ is sticky underwear. Personally, I'll take your potent Ford build up over sticky underwear anyday

Damn Greg, sounds like you either have more money into that engine than I thought or the lap dances are a lot cheaper in Texas than they are here in Maryland. A thousand lap dances here would run you about $30K. Of course that assumes you don't get some sort of bulk discount for being a repeat customer.

Heck, $30K would get you three Kieth Craft built 428 strokers at 500+ HP each. If I were going to spend that kind of money, I would get one KC motor and about 300 lap dances. The rest would be gas and tire money.

Well, I was including what I've got invested in the whole truck project. Remember, there's 2 trucks combined in this mess and almost nothing is untouched (suspension, brakes, all bushings, gauges, AC, on and on and on).

Lap Dances are about $20 here in Texas. Tuesdays are 2 for 1...so my money could have gone even farther :-)

When my time comes...Am I gonna look back on life and ponder this damn old truck or...........????????????

Only $20 and 2 for 1 on Tuesdays. Nothing like that available here in the Baltimore area as far as I know. Sounds like I need to move to Texas.

I noticed land/homes appeared cheaper when I went through Tucson as well. If everything is cheaper in Tucson, are there any good jobs?
