ECM And Not Starting

95 Ranger 4.0

My problem started two years ago when my truck wouldn't start the mechanic found it was the ground for the ECM and away I went. Recently the truck is exhibiting the same symptoms.

1) Check engine light not coming on when key is turned resulting in not starting.

I have cleaned off the ground area, the bolt and greased everything up to help make better contact. Here is what is happening when I turn the key the check engine light sometimes comes on and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I have to wait a few seconds and then it comes on. Yesterday however the truck wouldn't start and I checked the voltage from the batter to the ground screw for the ECM and it was 12.55 volts. After a few minutes of being in the on position the check engine light came on the fuel pump primed and I was able to start it up and come home.

I am wondering what I can check and or do to ensure that this will stop. The worst part is that the problem is intermitent. Any and all ideas will be appreciated!

Would I want to measure the dc current or resistance? If so could you help me out in how I would want to do that with my multimeter. I know it can do this I am just now sure how, I have only ever used it to take voltage readings.

I would check your ECM relay. You should have a bank of relays under the hood somewhere. One will be a fuel pump relay, and one may be a horn relay, but one of them should be the main power relay for the computer and it's sensors and injectors. See if the connections may be corroded where the relay plugs in. If the fuel pump and ecm relays look to be the same, swap them and see if the problem changes from the check engine light not burining, to the fuel pumps not running sometimes.

The relays are in good shape. I might try jumping the relay the next time this happens. I am just puzzled how sometimes if it wont start and I leave it in the on position it will turn on sometimes after two minutes.
