Working on an '88 B II, 2.9 eng, 5 spd & full load. Trouble is starter engages as soon as ignition is turned on and remains engaged until key off. Makes for very short trips!! Key switch has been replaced w/ new & dbl checked as per Ford diagnostic procedures. All OK. Starter relay also new. Disconnecting starter relay signal wire disengages starter so relay OK. At one time thought I had problem licked when I disconnected clutch interlock switch on steering column & jumped wires related to relay signal only. Worked fine for 2 days (just remember to be in neutral). Now starter engages w/ key on regardless of jumper wire in place or not. Where to look next??? Anyone else w/ similar experience??? Thanks for any help. Doug
Try this. Disconnect the ignition module and see if the starting problem goes away. It won't run with it disconnected, but see if it starts cranking by itself like it was doing before.
A guy on here the other day had this problem, and there are several common solutions, but his solution was a little bit strange in that he found a new ignition module fixed it. If you look at a wiring diagram, you will see that the module is connected to the starting circuit. The module uses this signal(a white wire) to retard the timing to make the engine crank easier. Apparently this circuit may have a failure mode where it will put 12 volts on the white wire as soon as the module receives voltage from the ignition switch.
