I finally got the hood back on my '51 after 5 years and found that the back end won't seat properly without manual intervention. The hood wasn't attached when I bought the truck so I don't know if it ever worked right. I found an old thread discussing this problem with the 53-56 models and the general conclusion there was to give up and buy a tilt conversion. Is it the same story with the 48-52 hoods, or do I just have poor/old/misaligned hardware?
Each one seems to be a law unto itself. Some fit, most don't. I've heard that if you close the hood to make your adjustments it works better. I have yet to try that. Mine has one side that raises at the back. I need to adjust the locating pin up front too. If you figure it out, post your success story for us.
My son and I have been trying to install our 55 hood for the past three evenings and got it pretty close, then decided to temporarily install the new rubber bumpers on the sides of the front fenders and the two rubber bumpers along the radiator support, along with the weather-stripping across the cowl, everything fell into place. Had they been on from the beginning, it would have been much easier. I don't know about your 51, but it may have similar bumpers.
I have the same problem on my 52 F3. After I close the hood, I just push it down by the windshield, and it goes into the proper place. For working under the hood, I would really like it to open higher. Has anyone made a modification that will make the hood open more? Even 15 degrees extra would help a lot.

Sorry to deviate from orig quest, but, have to jump in. Just put the hood back on my 55 (doing frame off rest) with new repro hinges. It is off to one side about 1/4". Fit OK with the old hinges before taking apart. Don't know if I should bend the hinges or shim it over? Is a uniform gap front to back and not cocked.Bumpers and cowl lace are on.
Thanks,
Fred K.
