You need a special tool to the disconnect the filter from the lines. You can pick it up at autozone for a few bucks. Also, don't forget that the system is under pressure. Take off the fuel cap and purge the valve on the fuel rail under the hood (looks like a big tire valve). Of course, be carefull you don't get gas everywhere (or on you) when doing this. I've heard about pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking the engine a few times to relieve the pressure, but not sure if that's a good idea or not. Hope that helps.
i have '01 4.2 and had to buy a set of small plastic insert type "tool", 2 diff colors, in a kit, one was one size line and the other was for another size line. you have to slip the plastic (2 halves if i remember) up into the connector& push a little, this will release the small spring like fingers and you got it. get an extra old towel to soak up excess gas that will leak out. i let mine set for about an hour at least,or more , the static line pressure will bleed down on its own, if you don't want to spray gas. but you must bleed off the pressure somehow. i always like to dump remaining gas from the filter into a glass jar & see if any water or crud in it....paul
Read back a few weeks, there are lots of tips for doing this. The most important one is that there are many different tools and they are not all created equal. One of the other threads has a picture of a metal scissor type on that works well.
The other thing, do not try to force the filter off or you will bend the fingers inside the connector and you won't be able to get it off.

Thanks for all the tips! I was used to changing the filter on any of my mustangs, but none were this new and i'm not familiar with those new clips. Thanks to all!
