I'm useing a double sump oil pan on my 351w and they say you cant use a high volume pump because of clearance. Does anyone know if theres a way to pump up the volume on a stock pump? Any info would be appreciated.
Why do you want a high volume oil pump? IMO, unless you are turning over 8k rpm for extended periods of time they are worthless and can actually do more harm than good.
A high pressure pump maybe, but Ive allways ran a high volume in all my motors and never had a problem. Mainly for low rpm and idle. 80- 100 psi at throttle. But I may not have a choice unless I redo my pan, and Ive already done that for fit in the car. and its been painted too.
A high volume pump will fit your oil pan, even with a windage tray. I've done it myself. I just had to use a hammer and a rounded punch to dent out the pan where the four oil pump bolts contacted the pan. A high volume pump is just a little bit taller then a standard. To those who believe old wives tales about high volume pumps not being good for your engine, please check out the Melling website. Good info there. Since high volume pumps cost little or no more money then a standard volume, Melling would have no reason to lie. Also, every pro engine builder I know uses high volume pumps. It's seen as cheap insurance for your engine. The only down side, is a high volume uses slightly more power to turn. VERY slight. Just use a hardened aftermarket pump drive shaft, as the stock shafts have been known to twist on VERY rare occaisions.
I've never heard that before. Overfilling the oil is never a good idea. Without a windage tray/crank scraper, the extra oil will tend to wrap itself around the crankshaft. All this oil picked up by the crank, puts a strain on the front and rear main seals and other parts.
I decided to rebuild the pan. Lucky for me I work at a place where I have everything I need. I cut the the front sump off about a inch down and fabbed a new one. tacked it together and made sure it fit before welding it. we have a welder at work and he welded it for me. I tried but burned through a couple times, thin metal on the pan. after he was done it looked grate. no leaks. I run the paint shop so that wasn't a problem either. looks store bought now. Now I just hope it fits in the car right. thanks.the pump was cosiderably taller, about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch
