Auto Tech Being Used In Other Applications!!!
I've been away from my computer enjoying my time off with a new Polaris Sportsman 700 EFI. What a blast! I have been driving it for the last three days every afternoon. I got it on Monday and the first day, I got it stuck. Yes, in summer I found a mud hole on the edge of a corn field that was over a foot deep. I got all muddy and made a mess. I had fun though and I got my truck down in there to pull it out. I've blazed my own trail that's exactly two miles long through a swampy field and along a hay field and through the woods. Awesome is all I can say. With that Electronic Fuel Injection, it starts right up and runs very smoothly. It doesn't sputter at all when you get on the gas and it is super good on fuel. I am supposed to get 20 mpg with it, I don't think that's super great, the motor is new now and I've put about 40 miles on it in three days and used up almost a whole tank so I'm getting about 10mpg. It's not a V8, what's up with that? So, fuel mileage might go up. This thing is a work 4 wheeler and I want to get a plow on it for winter. It will tow 1500 lbs. so will be nice to use when I park my trailer where my truck won't fit. Top speed on this thing is 70, I've gotten it up to 50 on a dirt road. That was fast, super fast.
Now, moderators, I know this is an automotive forum so I had to say that using auto technology in 4 wheelers is so neat. This is the first EFI four wheeler. I spent about half an hour just looking at everything and it's almost the same setup as an auto. It has hydraulic disc brakes, CV drivshafts, shocks, independent suspension that is awesome on something this size(better ground clearance and super smooth ride, you can hardly feel bumps and this thing is smoother than my truck), it has a constant locked rear(only thing I don't like because it tears up my lawn when I unload it from my trailer), and an auto locking automatic AWD 4x4 system. I LOVE MY NEW TOY!!!!
So that's what I've been doing. I'm taking my newphews out with me on Friday. They don't know that I've boughten one so they will be excited. This is my first 4 wheeler, I've ridden on three wheelers, but have never had something like this before. It's great and I'm so glad I went with Polaris. I have 5 1/2 hrs. on the motor and it runs great. Smooth starts when hot or cold, no sputters or smoke, and when you give it full throttle and it hits 30, it feels like a super charger kicks in and it throws you back and the acceleration is fast. I didn't expect that from a work 4 wheeler. I was looking at the Preadator one, but thought oh that's too dinky. I need the big one for work. So if you guys are looking at these things for work, hunting, or fun then look at Polaris. I don't have any kids yet, but someday it will be fun to take the whole family out and have a 4 wheeler for everyone. I never had one when I was a kid, the ones they made then were little, so this makes me feel like a kid and I just go out and have fun. I hit all the mudholes and go through all the water. It's a blast.
So, I am just amazed by how much these things have changed and how the technology from cars and trucks have come into these things. Locking diffs, cv driveshafts, axleshafts, hydraulic brakes, digital control monitor. The tires are these low pressure tires that you inflate only to 5 psi and they feel pumped up at that pressure. It's expensive, you can buy an 00 Taurus for the price of the 700 EFI, but it is so worth it. I've taken my mom out for a ride on it, my dad wants to get one. It's really a great way to have fun with the family and enjoy the outdoors. I think this would be a great way to teach a kid respect for the environment and just repsect for machines and to learn how to be safe. You can also teach kids to do change the oils on it and maintain it. When I have some kids, I can't wait to buy them some of these things. They have little 49cc four wheelers for those 6 and up and even these little dirt bikes. The little ones aren't cheap, but I found some nice used ones for a great price and you can finance them so it's more affordable. I love mine and I'm addicted. I'm just afraid I'll be wearing mine out in no time. Anyone know how many miles you can get on these things?
That's the end of my shpeel. I am going to go hose of my ATV and get it shiny again. It's great to see other things taking advantage from the technical gains from auto technology. EFI in a four wheeler is really a break through. Better mileage, nor carb to adjust, computer diagnostics, and high altitude operation and no sputtering or stalling on hills. I am so amazed and I am hooked. This is more fun for me than going wheeling in a truck and it's a heck of a lot cheaper then breaking parts. I also like the open feel with the wind and all and getting dirty in the mud. Great fun!

Sounds like a cute little guy. Yes, I did get the Taurus GVW. Thanks a lot. I did my calculations and proved the Taurus to be stronger then I thought it'd be. I guessed on the GVW at first and was only off by a margin. That was luck on my part.
Oh man, sorry to hear about the car. Was your wife hurt? You never know when you are going to have an accident so it pays to just be careful and never to be in a hurry. I tell myself that, if I'm late getting somewhere I'd rather be late instead of never making it there at all. Accidents happen though and some you can't control. It's dangerous out there. Sorry to hear about that.
They've had EFI in snowmobiles for years now...makes a huge difference and I love it. My 700cc EFI sled gets about 15 mpg with a little beating...high reving 2 strokes are pigs on gas.
I even got a certificate paper saying I took a safety course. Haha, yeah what a safety course. I was told the basic functions of the controls in under 3 minutes then I took the test model for drive around their parking lot to see how I liked it. Then I watched a video that was about 15 minutes that comes with all the manuals. That was torture because I already watched the video from the Polaris website.
If you don't watch the video, they won't cover you for a warranty! So, I endured that and looked at a brochure while the video was playing. Then I signed papers and got it registered while they took my four wheeler out back to fuel it up and check everything on it. I loaded it up and then I was out to play with my new toy. Very cool. I can't wait to buy another one, I thought it'd take a long time. I guess if you want a more detailed safety course where you actually spend time on a machine, you could probably sign up for one, but I was happy with my quicky cheat safety course. Now I have a little certificate that says I took a safety course incase I want a reduced insurance rate or for whatever reason. I have ridden these things before so I'm not really new to them, but this is the first one I've owned so I can handle it okay and I didn't want to bother asking about a real safety course. I'm glad I didn't have to spend a lot of time taking one, time is money, LOL.
