I am trying to find out the engine family number in my new (to me) 97 Explorer. Supposedly it should be on the Emission Control Information label under the hood, but that's just not there! The vehicle was originally sold by Ford in Canada, so maybe that's why it doesn't have that label. Seems like I should be able to find the engine family number though. I am hoping it will match up with the following: VFM4.028G2HK
Anyone have any ideas?
If it helps, this is for the purpose of identifying whether it qualifies as a transitional low emission vehicle.
If its a 97 model Explorer it should have the 4.0L V6 engine . Only the Mountaineers had the 5.0L V8 in 97 . Check the Vin number , If it begins with a 2 its Canadian Made . 1 or 4 indicates Us Made .
Quite right, it's a 4.0L V6 made in the U.S. (VIN starts with 1).
But I still need to match up that engine family number (VFM4.028G2HK). I hate to just give up on this for lack of information. What I'm trying to do is qualify for a program in my state called "Scrap and Buy". I have an '86 Saab that I can scrap and get a voucher for $1000 toward the Explorer I just purchased IF it qualifies as a Low Emission Vehicle. The list of eligible vehicles includes '97 Explorer with that engine family number. Unfortunately nowhere else on God's green earth does an engine family number take that form, at least that I can find. Several guys at the dealership looked for it and couldn't find it on the vehicle, and I've looked all over the 'net for info.
That is the Engine Family ... Engine Family to the best of my knowledge simply refers a group of engines with similar design , emissions equipment etc . The number you posted is the engine calibration number . Its used to purchase & identify parts that are specific to that engine . If running properly Im sure your engine emissions are well within your states emission standards .
