Hey all i have a 99 explorer 4x4 with 4.0 ohv, and @130,000 miles.
I recently noticed a noise/ rattle in my front end, it happens when i travel over some slight bumps and i can feel it in my steering wheel, but if i sit still and turn the wheel it feels pretty tight... know that my drivers side cv joint boot is busted...it has been for a while...im thinking ball joints? i havent had a chance to really check yet. What do ya'll think?
if i would have to guess, i would say it is the ball joints, the way to test is to put in a lift and pull on the wheels and if there is any give, its a sign of bad ball joints. hope this helps
Yes, front axles do turn when in "4Auto". A bad CV boot means certain death to a CV joint. It would be good to get a new boot on it before the bearings get dirty and fail. But I doubt that even with a failed CV joint that you would feel what you describe. Ball joints is the best suspicion, but there are bushings for the suspension that can cause the same. Don't forget to look at the bushing for the anti-sway bar.
i got underneath and grabbed the half shaft and wiggled it it sounded alot like what im experiencing i dont feel it all the time either mainly when slowing down... not so much over bumps unless they are slight...
