Will an auto transmission out of a 55 Victoria with a 292 fit in my 64 truck with a 3 speed? I understand that the motor mounts are different, but is there any way I can work around it? I'd appreciate any help you can offer.............Wayne

sURE wAYNE, ALL YOUR BASIC 272, 292,312... ALL MOUNT UP TO THE SAME TRANSMISSIONS...It is only when you try mounting lincoln Yblocks where the changes come into play, and the 317,341,368, are the ones that would only cause issues....Janet
Don't know where you got your info but I ran the old 292's when I was a kid and for several years afterward and I never had any problems with this kind of swap with sticks and I wouldn't think there would be any with autos. You should have everything that came off the auto car, mounts, bolts, ect and it should be a snap.

rlangs58[/QUOTe Check this link out and i'll show you how many differences there are, that would be constant work

I agree, but the ford Yblock 312 and under, would keep one from doing too many changes. also those lincoln Yblocks were cruisers and harder to repair and find pars for....Janet
The Ford-O-Matic bellhousing for trucks differs from the car units. Also, FOM trucks had provisions for water/oil heat exchanger while the '55 cars were merely air cooled.
most 55,s i saw were water cooled.you will need a bell.and of course put on your front truck mount which means changing your timing cover.if your tranny is air cooled and you dont have the right bell just hook up the lines going to rad and water cool it i dont think theres any problem doing this.
thanks for your posts.but i`m still confused.i was told that the engine mounts for the truck engines are on the transmission, and the car engines actually have mounys on the engine.is this true?how do i get around it?would this be a good choice for my truck or should i continue looking?how much should i pay for this type of trans?and do you have any ideas on where i could locate an affordable bellhousing.i`m running 389 gears.i can cruise comfortably at 65-70 now.would this trans be comparable?.........wayne
Well if I remember right that is the case but the simple answer is that you need a truck transmission & I just went out tonight & looked at both of my truck transmissions and Neither of them have mounts on them except on the bottom
where they set on the transmission crossmember. So either My Memory is wrong or the trany crossmember holds up both the engine & trany. It was to dark & could not find a flashlight so will check on the truck tomorrow, oh it's already tomorrow; well later today & let you know what I find.

Reason: mistake
To put an automatic into a truck, you'll need to locate a truck bellhousing for an automatic.
As previously mentioned, use the front timing cover off of your current truck engine. And use the truck exhaust manifolds. You may need to shorten your driveshaft. You'll need the yoke from the car's driveshaft, too.

I have a 55 ford firlane, and yes those did not come with a 292, but came with either a 223 six or a 272 Yblock. When i purchased my 55 fairlane, it had no engine at all, so the fastest way to find an engine for it, was a 1960 Galaxy with a 292, which has the punch press on the same old valve covers with the exception of have F O R D punch pressed into my valve covers. I have explained this in many topics at this forum, but you're right, the 55 fairlane did not come with a 292.We also were able to use the 3 on the tree standard with that 292 that came out of that 60 galaxy...Janet
The first car I bought off a lot right out of high school in 62 was a 55 Customline
4-dr. Automatic & supposedly a 272 but I ate those 265 chevy's everyday.
I never did tear that engine down so I don't know what was in it but it could run, The best $150.00 I ever spent.
I recently removed a 292 w/ auto 3 speed from a 63 truck. The bellhousing has mounting ears/horns, and is super heavy. It has oil line to the engine block, maybe for cooling(?), but also had an external cooler.
I am no expert, but the truck tranmission setup looked nothing like the car setups I've worked on ('57 sedan, and wagons w/292 or 312s)
I have the tranny, bellhousing and everything that bolted to these items sitting in my garage. if you have specific questions, post them, and I will see what I can answer based on what is sitting there or I can send pictures if you like. for pictures, send email at my yahoo account, my user name at yahoo, that is.
I need to sell this setup at some point. I don't own a truck, nor do I plan to own an automatic one any time soon. I dream of an early 60s yblock powered truck w/a t5, but not an auto.
I'm interested in your truck setup. Don't know where you are in CA, I'm in Tucson. Lets see if we can come up with something mutually benificial for both of us. Thx. David
First of all I haven't been in California since 88, Secondly I have 3 & 4 speeds
for my 292 not an auto, I think for some reason some of these threads get a
little tweeked now & then. I'm in Wichita,Ks now as for the 58 SB I've put it
up for sale & am concentrating on getting the 84 together.
