How does this rig sound?

OK, heres an idea ive been toying with for a trail rig, tell me what you think of it.

Start with a 73-76 highboy w/D60's front and rear w/4.10's, manual trans, NP205, 390, lift it about 3-4 inches and trim the fenders some to fit 38's, and build custom winch bumper/brushguard. Eventually swap in a cummins 12 valve and 6 speed manual and run straight pipes (stacks coming out behind the cab).
This truck would be used strictly for off-road.

Sounds fun. I would use the 76 so it comes with disc brakes. You know, I started out to build a truck like that, and I ended up with about 1/2 that truck. Oh, well.

But of course a highboy won't come with a D60 front axle so you'll need to find one to throw in it. And be sure it's a kingpin axle, not a BJ. Also, especially if it's strictly for offroad use, go to at least 4.56 gears, not 4.10. You may even want to gear lower.

Ya i'll swap in the D60 and 78-79 steering. I was considering the 4.10's because of the diesel but i will consider 4.56. oh ya, i is also going to paint it bright orange with a rebel flag on the tailgate

Why not start with a 78-79 to begin with. Your lifting anyway plus you can get the D60's in it to start not counting the steering.

79, your headed in the same direction i am. i have a 75 f250 with a dana 60 front, np435, np205, and 4.10 gears. you wouldnt hafta trim any fenders to fit 38s with 3-4 inches of lift....these trucks can run 36s stock. i like the highboys, cant beat that split grill. best years imo.

you gotta remember man, if the cummins goes in there the gearing won't have to be tweaked as fine as with a gas motor due to the gibs of torque! also with the manual tranny more power/torque will get to the wheels so gearing will be even less of an issue! you don't wanna get so low that your power brakes won't stop the truck! (i have seen this and it sucks!)

Just outta stupidity, what do the gears have to do with the brakes?

And, again, because of ignorance, doesnt the torque converter increase the torque an engine puts out versus a manual transmission, gearing being equal?

if your in the lowest gear possible and you are rolling along it takes 2 or 3 times the braking power to stop b/c of the extra leverage of the gears! no it doesn't do anything directly but it is a lot easier to stop a lil Saturn car than to stop a 4x4 diesel in low range!

no a torque converter slips (that's why it doesn't stall the motor out when you stop) and therefore you lose power b/c it won't lock up completely unless you get an aftermarket converter! a manual tranny has a direct link straight into the tranny and there is no slippage!

Mainly because they are a heck of alot harder to find around here than highboys. For some reason there are about 10 highboys in my area where as theres only 2 or 3 78-79's.

This is a common misconception, it does provide torque multiplication. Today's converters can provide 2-3 times the amount of torque to the rear wheels at a given RPM when compared to direct drive. In a manual tranny this is just like slipping the clutch to get a heavy load rolling. This is also the reason you see auto's with higher tow ratings than manuals.

Lockup converters are designed to lock once you get to a predetermined RPM. This is to improve gas milage more than anything because a non-lockup converter will always slip to some extent.

Sorry to derail the conversation.

Ya, sometime i will start on this, after i get my F-150 driving reliably (i lost the brakes last night.) I dont think the cummins swap will be that hard, the only really major thing it looks like i would need to do would be lower the front crossmember about 2 inches. For lack of a better name, i am going to call it the "really big orange truck" like a say, i want to start on this real soon, i will keep yall posted
