I have a 1996 F-250 PSD with manual trans and 120K miles. One day last week my truck started steering hard, and it wants to pull after turning, in the direction I just turned. It's worse when cold and moving slow.
I checked the steering fluid level and it's good. No bad noises from the steering pump either, sounds normal. I did notice the little cap on the end of the vacuum pump is missing, but I'm not sure if the vacuum pump effects steering or not. The brakes work fine even at idle, so I'm thinking the vacuum pump is OK. Is that just a dust cover on the end of the vacuum pump?
Anyway my main question is:
1. Any ideas what might cause this steering problem?
2. Does the steering system use vacuum boost from the vacuum pump?
