I asked about a seat to fit my 79 f150 before and was told that anything up to a 96 would work if I changed the sliders. Has anyone sucessfully installed any other seat combos even if you had to change mounts?
i put buckets in easily enough, but it doesnt sound like youre interested in that. i just took my old bench brackets and welded 1"x2" steel tubing all the way across the brackets when they were bolted in, spacing them correctly to bolt up to some junkyard buckets we had sitting around that was gonna go in our old jeep. they sit nice and sturdy (and level), and can still use the original slider from the bench. just make sure the bolts on the bottom of the bucket all sit flush.
Use the advanced search function and search the 73-79 forum for "replace seat" or "bucket seat" or "split bench" - you will come up lots of different options. I can remember some users installing buckets, 40/60 split benches, car seats, racing buckets, ect...
I put in a 40/60 from a '97 into my 79. I had to remove the '97 slider hardware and put my original sliders on it. I transposed the holes from the old seat onto the new one and it has worked well so far. I recommend tacking a few nuts onto the new seat's frame to hold the orginal sliders though. I've been very happy with my seat swap. It does sit a tad lower and I can't slide it back that far either (which tacking the nuts would improve), but it works great compared to what used to be in there.
I just changed out the seats in my 78 crew cab with late 80's early 90's ford truck seats and it works great. I used the seats that kind of look like buckets but are a bench, all I had to do was change the slides and all the bolt holes lined up. It made the truck look alot better inside and also sits alot better. It was worth the time and money to change them out. Now I need to get them recovered.
My brother installed a 60/40 from a 80's era truck into his '78 and it fit like a glove, is extramely comfortable (especially comparred to the stock vinyl bench that was in there), and must have been real easy to install considering my brother actually did it himself. I still want to put a 40/20/40 in my '77, but they are hard to find around here. I had one in my '95 PSD Crew cab and love that style seat.
I should get my seat back from the upholstry shop tomorrow. It's from a 90 xlt with a fold down arm rest in the centre. Very comfortable seat. I will be installing it into my '76 after xmas. It will be great to get rid of the tired old seat. I'll let you know how I make out.
I have put in 02 F-250 seats, the 40/60/40 I think is what they call it. It is the one with the two seats and the console that flips up to a seat. Built a frame from 1x1" square tubing. The seats fit fine, except they are higher up than the stock bench seat. It is a much better set up than stock seat.
It took a bit of Fab work to get them to sit rite, but i was able to use the stock seat mount holes to the floor.
