5.0 V8 Clicking
I have a 1997 5.0 V8 Explorer that "clicks" during acceleration. The problem occurs during acceleration after a cold start and disappears after approximately 5 minutes. The sound is annoying and is the first topic of conversation when someone rides with me. It has grown worse during the cold weather spell and disappears now after 30 minutes of highway driving.
A local shop says it's an exhaust manifold leak, but it sounds like the valves "clicking". I'm hoping someone has had a similar encounter with this issue. Any help is apprciated on how to remedy this problem.

Hey hChang!
I've got a 96 5.0 V8 I was told some time ago that 96 was the last year of the 5.0 before they switched over to the new 4.6
No biggy, I guess I just learned something new today.
I also have experienced this problem, but only at a lesser extent, I'm sure. I get a clicking during cold acceleration only sometimes. I thought it was the lifters. It goes away after the engine warms up. Since it hasen't gotten so bad, I havent had need to complain much. Especially after nearly 117,000 mi.
I would say that it is likely a low-tech fix, however. V8 engines like our 5.0 have been having these kind of problems for a long time and I'd bet that your local 'wrench' could solve it as well as any dealer service dept. And, at a much lower price.
