I just got a 2001 Explorer Sport about a month ago, and at about 500 miles problems started. Most of the time it starts up normal, but other times it sounds like the engine is struggling to start and sounds very weak. Another time when i went to start it all there was was the sound of the starter cranking-but no engine, when i tried to start it again it started normally. Another thing I noticed is that when it starts normally there is a snap or crack noise when I release let go of the key after it starts. I know I'm starting it right but there is something wrong with the starter, fuel pump, or fuel injector. Anyone have similar problems? If so how did you fix it?
Sounds like the starter is the trouble . With only 500 on it and what you paid / paying for it , it would be back to Ford . Thats what warranty is for . Its better it fails now . It may just be something as simple as a loose connection . Regardless , Let the Ford techs deal with it .

I have a 2001 explorer sport. I have experienced your exact problem, it has been into ford dealership twice now. Ford techs think that the anti-theft system is not recognizing the chip on the key. They replaced the transcevier on the first trip to the shop. It is at present in the shop. I would like this resolved. Sounds like I am not the only one out there with this problem.
This problem still has not been resolved. This is the fifth time to be in the shop. The first time they said nothing was wrong. Second time they replaced the transciever in the anti-theft system. The third time they replaced another part in the anti-theft system. The fourth time the dealer replaced the fuel pump. Now it is in the shop for the fifth time and they said they can't find anything wrong with it. Also, I am having a problem with a bad vibration anytime I am at a stop light. Is there anyone else having these problems with the "new" 2001 Explorer Sport?
I too have a 2001 Explorer Sport. Mine starts fine, all the time. But, I too have the rough idle. I think it idles around 600rpm and it's ROUGH. I had it into the shop when I noticed the compressor always running (vacuum leak) and told them of the rough idle, they blamed it on the compressor running from the AC....yea, whatever. This thing always idles rough!
They even hooked it up to the diagnostics and ran all the tests (that don't show anything). I'm sure others have the rough idle and think it's normal, well I had a 93 Explorer Sport that I drove into the ground that idled better than my 2001. My lawnmower runs smoother!
i have a 2000 explorer 4L SOHC
idles rough at cold, once warm it's fine
Had it to the dealer now 4 times and is still there now. they have no glus what's the matter with it.They have uploaded the info they got from the brain to detroit and are waiting for them to say how to fix it.There is no code stored, which trough makes it hard to figure this out i was told. All i know, i better get it back soon,or fors will be buyiing it back from me!!
