I'm looking for some help. I have a 76 f100 with a 390 it was rebuilt by the previous owner. It runs at 160 while I'm on the hiway running 55-65, but when I get on the interstate and try to run 75 it starts to climb to 195 then I back off the thottle and it goes back down a little. Also climbs as soon as I get into stop and go traffic. It climbed as high as 220 within 20 min of beiing in traffic this morning before I got moving again and it dropped back to 190 but no lower. Any suggestions. It has a new 4 row radiator with shroud, 160 thermostat. Doesn't have any water in the oil or oil in the water, so I dont think the block is cracked. Possible head gasket? water pump? Any help would be appreciated.
It's designed to run 190 - 220. I've always been told it's not considered 'over heating' until its over 240.
Did it go over 220 in traffic? Try 75 on the interstate for several miles - see if it acutally goes over 220. What type of fan do you run? Is it half in and half out of the shroud?
The fan is half in and half out of the shroud. It's an aftermarket 7 blade. It got up to 220 in traffic but I started moving at that time so it went back down. I checked the timing and it was 12 degrees BTDC. I retarded it back to 7 degrees but not much change. It never got above 220 on the interstate.
