Question please help....

ok, serious problem with my truck. It is an '88 f-150 with a staight 6, 5-spd man, 4wd, single tank behind the rear axle.
I just a new tank and sendering unit on, but i am still having a serious fuel issue. I seems that I still have a leak somewhere in the system sobad that It will not build any pressure. I can hear the pump cycle when I turn the key on and the truck will idle fine. But as soon as there is a load on the engine, it sputters and bucks, and starts to die, but if you cycle the throttle a little it seems like it wants to catch, but it doesn't. now it did get it going a littl bit, and as soon as when to shift, and hit the clutch, it dies, again....
I did drop the tank yesterday to see if there was a line loose, and when I went to release the system pressure, I was rather shocked to find out that the system didn't have any pressure.....

any help would be very welcomed....

you need to find out if you have fuel pressure with the fuel pump energized or with the engine running,(if you can). then go from there. your fuel pressure regulator may be bad (not allowing fuel pressure to build) if you have a leak with the pump runnig you would know it right away, fuel every where. when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced, if it is clogged no fuel. also with the 88 year you will have a low pressure feed pump in the tank and a high pressure pump inside on the left hand side frame rail right about under the cab. if that's not working ther will be high pressure. to hear this one run crawl under and listen for it. you'll her it if it's working. fuel pressure with the pump energized should be around 30-40 p.s.i. hope this helps.

fuel filter was replaced at the same time as the tank and sending unit... about a month ago... I can hear the a pump run as soon as I turn the key on, but I am not sure of the hp pump. the fuel leak is occasional, normally when I fill the tank, but when i dropped the tank, i could not dertemine where it was leaking from, but it was leaking before this problem started....

problem solved

after several hours of trouble shooting and a lot of swearing... found the problem.... the problem wasn't a lack of fuel pressure, but an excess of it. as mike93 stated, normal fuel pressure should be 30-40, and my truck was at 110 psi. which means bad fuel regulator... all fixed, truck is running good as new.... thanks for the fyi as to the pressure specs

glad you found the problem. 110lbs that's way high. i think i would have freak if i say that. i didn't think the pump could go that high. but i guess that's what fuel pressure specs are for.

p.s. check for clogs or kinks in your return lines. just a thought.

yeah, that was the other prob.. the lines on the tank were both kinked... I guess that i did not see that when i put the tank back up..... but the pressure regulator was also bad... to say the least......

GUYS! The fuel pressure at the Fuel Rail on an INJECTED 300 should be 58-61 AT IDLE. 35-40 is the bent engine pressures.

Good article on injector swap and WHY the pressures are higher on the 6. Click Da Link.
