i have a question if i were to take out the thermostat would it increase water into the engine to keep constant water flow into engine or will it cuase damage
i currently have a 180 in there does it help to take it out or does it cause damage .
I've seen that happen due to a bad thermostat. Also seen a clogged heater core cause that. I'm sure there are other conceivable causes (any other bad cooling system component, an air bubble at the sending unit, electrical fault between the sending unit and the dash, etc.)
When mine did that, I started by flushing the heater core (in part because I wasn't getting hot air out of the heater). That fixed it for a while, but it resumed fluctuating. The next thing I did was to back probe the ECT (computer uses a different temperature sensor from the dash gauge) with voltmeter to see if the fluctuating temperature was real, or if it was an electrical gremlin in the sending circuit. When I saw that it was real, I took out the thermostat, tried to open it with my fingers, and could feel that it was sticky. Replaced the thermostat and haven't had that problem since.
