I am trying to change the thermostat on my 2000 Excursion 6.8. I removed the water neck and tried to remove the thermostat. It won't come out. Isn't it like changing any old thermostat? Remove water neck lift out thermostat and drop in new one? Or am I missing something? I have pulled hard it wont move it will turn in the housing. Help.
They are sealed with an o'ring. The o'ring must be stuck to the wall of your intake. Carefully dig out the o'ring with a screw driver. Only dig on the t-stat not down the wall of your intake. Mine took a little to get out also. I put in a 180 to lower operating temps.
195 is the factory one. I found my truck actually running around 210 with that in there so I put in the 180. Now it runs around 190. I think you can even get 170 though.
what is the standard temp thermostat, and what options are available for replacements?
Depends on the year of the truck and location where it is being sold.
I think running with no t-stat would make this beast overheat quick when pulling the trailer up to tahoe.
Nope the opposite really. The engine will run cold until you work it enough to get the temperature up towards the temp the cooling system can sustain. I put a 160 in my 74' and it still wanted to run at around 195-200 degrees when completely warmed up in summer. Not surprisingly the correct thermostat for that engine/year was 195-198 degrees. Ford put a lot of time in designing the cooling system and what temperature the engine should run at.
Thanks. I think mine is stuck open. It took forever to put out any heat over the winter. Last summer even towing my data logging only showed 165. It might of hit 170. I just want to have the Ex running as well as possible.
LOL be happy it stuck open mine ended up sticking closed when I was going camping happen on the freeway pulled over let it cool down luckly we had another car with us and we got a 175 thermostat but this trip gets even better on the way back I hear the loud pop and it started sounding like an old tractor pulled over pop the hood I see the spark plug chilling on the block Its a sad day when you see your truck being loaded up on a flat bed.
Still having problems with mine overheating when towing the trailer. New: Radiator, added trans cooler, back to 195 t-stat. Next will be water pump. If this doesn't work.
So did you get it out. I just replaced mine too. I was trying to find a 180 but would have been special order I said screw it and just stayed with the 195.
OP wa shaving trouble getting it out not me. Mine was so easy it hurt. I put back the 195 so good thing you couldn't find one. The guys here said it was bad idea so I asked at Ford as well and they agreed so in went the 195. Funny thing is that the 195 was special order at Ford?! Who knew?
