I've getting tired of washing the body and taking extreme delecate care of my truck after going mudding, so im thinking of just getting a cheap junk truck that i can scrape on a tree or tear off a fender and not care about. Does anyone know where i could get a working but primer ridden pain chipping dent infested farm junk truck like this? eBay doesn't do good for these kinds of trucks, plus nothings close to me on there. Im thinkin about a late 70s early 80s Chevy k20 and lifting it a good bit (a 6" lift dont cost more than 6 or 700 bucks). Im havin trouble findin these and if anyone has any suggestions or has done this before, please let me know! thanks
I don't agree with the "eBay" portion of your post because I have purchased three off-road vehicles....the last a killer mudrunner....cheap enough to justify up to a 2,800 mile round trip to pick up and trailer the latter one home. I prefer Ford RBVs for mudding and general off-roading and my favorite is the Bronco II which is what I am currently running. They are small enough to go where the heavy metal can't, relatively cheap to mod for off-roading, and deliver great performance. The deal with eBay is you have to hang in there and something in your price range will eventually materialize. Good luck and regards to you and yours,
Your best bet is to get an 70s to early eighties ford 3/4 ton for cheap from a wreckers (this is what i did) then when you can afford to spend more on tires and motor mods and lifts, and youcan get away redneck type lifts and such.
I run into that with my truck. I don't mind beating it on a trail on bumps and mud, but dents and big scratches on my truck's body is what I am afraid of.
I went for a quick wheel last night down a narrow trail and had a couple of rocks in the way. I got a little nervous because my truck was starting to slide towards the rock but I got through it ok (having dual lockers is great!). If I had a beater I wouldn't mind if i slid into the rock and had a dent. Pop it out and away i would go.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding a good beater, look in the local papers or we have small magazines like automart and Wheels...bunch of ads from people trying to sell a vehicle in this area. I bet you have something like that near you.
My truck is probably exactly what you're looking for (my description fits yours to a tee, even came off a farm!)... too bad he's not for sale! I paid 500 bucks for it, but I've since done alot of mechanical work to it - motor, brakes, cleaned the gas tank, etc etc. It still looks exactly the same as the pictures in my gallery. I found mine on ebay. I'd say ebay is a pretty good source to find an old "beater".
tell you what ebay does have alot of good deals bought my wifes bronco off ebay paid less than half of what kelly blue book or other sources told me it worth drove 400 miles to pick it up have spent a total of $250 on repairs, it had brand new tires on it (although not good mud tires but it is the wifes after all), and with everything I am still into it for less than $2000 and this isn't a beater but actually a fairly good looking vehicle so just keep looking, also look around the country side where you live, a friend of mine locally here found a 76 F250 box was crunched and the body had various dings, and dents, it was sitting by a fence row went and asked the farmer about it told him it didn't run but he could have it for $200 went and looked it over pulled it home the engine was still free so put a battery in it but it wouldn't turn over through a starter at it, and wallla it started.
BTW I bought a car that way once they told me the engine was froze paid $50 for it figured out the battery was dead, tried jumping it, and found the headlights came on even with the switch off, so put a new battery, and switch, and drove that car for another 35K miles, and sold it for $100
Nice truck, Monster....here's my latest from eBay. I was in the process of building another B2 and figured it was going to cost me about $2400. Found this one in Miami, popped it for $800 and another $400 for gas to drag the trailer down there and bring it back Father's Day weekend. Cool thing was I was going down to visit with my folks that weekend, and they're only a 150 miles north of Miami. A winch and a spare and I'm in business. Wheeled it at Attica Badlands the very next weekend and it's one heck of a machine. It was my third successful eBay acquisition....deals can be had with patience and planning.
