From the Harvard Business school:

Managers and leaders are two very different types of people. Managers' goals arise out of necessities rather than desires; they excel at defusing conflicts between individuals or departments, placating all sides while ensuring that an organization's day-to-day business gets done. Leaders, on the other hand, adopt personal, active attitudes toward goals. They look for the opportunities and rewards that lie around the corner, inspiring subordinates and firing up the creative process with their own energy. Their relationships with employees and coworkers are intense, and their working environment is often chaotic.

Basically Managers are to get everyone working together, Leaders are to stir the pot to get the juices going....

you go to a Manager for your check
you go to a Leader for advice

You ask a Manager for a raise
You ask a Leader for direction

A Manager will tell you how to do something
A Leader will show you how to do something

A Manager is someone you have to follow
A Leader is someone you want to follow

You can promote someone to a Manager
You can't make someone a leader who already isn't

Question usually is though which one are you?

Excellent points !!!

A manager is reactive... a leader pro-active !

A manager avoids mistakes - a leader excels in making them because they are "out there"

Differences Between a Manager and a Leader

The manager administers; the leader innovates.

The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range perspective.

The manager asks how and when; the leader asks what and why.

The manager has his/her eye on the bottom line; the leader has his/her eye on the horizon.

The manager accepts the status quo; the leader challenges it.

I heard it once said:
Manager's think they run a company. Leader's run a company.

More Seriously:
Leaders are put in charge of nations. Managers are bureaucrats.

Leaders can be Managers, but Managers aren't always leaders.

Leaders have the drive to take charge and get the job done with others willing to follow and work with them.
Managers have the job of taking charge and tell other people to get the job done. (If you have ever hated a boss, they are likely this type of person).

Leaders tend to be wise, insightful, and full of ambition.
Managers believe they are wise and insightful. They are also generally full of something, but ambition ain't it.

If you can separate a leader from a manager, then you can make your own world easier.
If you are a leader, do your thing and go forth.
If you are just a manager, remember there is a leader out there looking to take your place.

Attila the Hun was a leader. Would you want to work for him?
