AOD are they all the same????

I got an 86 f 150 4x4 with the AOD tranny, and np 208 case. I need to replace or rebuild the trans. I got one wrecker sayin that all the aod's are basically the same, and one from a grand marquie or crown vic will work, just change out the tail shaft from my old, and I got another, sayin, nope, different tranny, truck is longer than a car, and it won't work.
Can anybody tell me if there is any major difference??
My neighbour put a trans outa a crown vic into his 88 f 150 half and it went in fine, no changes at all.
I think as long as it has the 1 2 3 D shift pattern, they are all the same, no???

An AOD has a 1 D OD shift pattern, but there was only one AOD and it was only used behind the 302 to my knowledge.

The first place is correct. Ford did not build trannys for trucks and another same model for cars. 4X4s require a different tail shaft to connect to the transfer case, while a 2X4 connects to the drive shaft.

hope this helps

There are at least 2 different length output shafts and extension housings on 2 wd AOD's.

This is exactly right. There are two different length output shafts and tailshaft housings for 2wd, in addition to the 4wd version.

There are also two different tailshaft bushing diameters for 2wd.

Other than that there is no difference between a car and truck AOD.

Ford improved the tailshaft lubrication or something in the late 80's. Ford Motorsport sold a retrofit kit for early AODs to fix this. I don't know if that applies to the 4x4 version, though. Something you'll want to look into...

ok, a buddy of mine tells me that the tail shaft length is longer with the two wheel, which I allready figured, but also tells me that in order to use the two wheel tranny in my 4 wheel, I will need to disasemble the tranny to change the shaft. Is this true??? Gonna have a boo see tomorrow.
