I have a '77 F250 and it is equipped with a 351-M. Can anyone give me an estimate of the power gain I will achieve if I shave the heads down 15 thousandths? Thanx.
do you realize that adds up to over an inch? if you meant .072 and .035, you'd just be getting into detonation, knock and ping territtory. i'd go with a cam, timing set and headers for some usable power and improved driveability. you'll be surprised how far the stock 2bbl will go.

yea and on most pistons the piston would extend out of the block, and milling the heads I have heard that .060 is the safe MAX, and .050 is a better place to stop, I have to agree this amount would put you into dangerous territory on an open chamber engine, although with .025 off hte block or zero deck, and .050 off the heads you would probably be in the 10:1 range, and with 100LL or 93, and alot of octane booster you could drive it but unless you are racing, I wouldn't and if you are then look at different heads like the Aussie heads then you would atleast have a quench chamber to help with detonation, and wouldn't have to mill so far although you will still have to come close to zero decking the block.
I always figured about .1 compression points for every 0.010" off open chamber heads. You need to run the math for the actual compression ratio on any engine. There are a number of good compression ratio calculators out there.
A cam and headers etc are a better way to make power.
Yes anything less than 93 it will ping and knock. But when it fires on you know it. Yes cam, is good . Yes headers is good . Yes the geardrive is good , but comprtion is best. I had to put 351W pushrods in it. Lets see 250.00 virces 25.00 for a shave job. That means the 6 kids don't get to eat for the week. I did the math, this works for me and has for 4 years. In that time I have burnt a set of 33 SX's, that is an inch of rubber.
my understanding is that compression is an extremely poor return on HP. anything above 9 or 9.5:1 only gets you a couple of percent. if the kids are hungry, i'd go easy on the tire$
