I have an 94 explorer that seems to engage the transfer case but I get no power to the front wheels. I pulled the hub front cover off and saw no broke parts.I Just thought someone might of had a simlar problem and could give me some insight be before i tear into it. Thanks in advance, Justin
a symptom I'm all to familiar with. Inside your hub is a plastic bushing (it may be metal but I'm pretty sure they swithed to plastic by 94) I believe ford calls the retainer. Once it is worn your 4wd will not engage (even slight wear will cause this and you may not be able to notice it by eye). Ford will not sell this simple piece by itself so expect ford to gouge you for about $300 for the entire hub. I've replaced three of these things now and your symptoms seem to match mine to a tee.
I also have a 94 Explorer with the same problem with Auto Hubs. Just inspected my passenger side hub yesterday and just like a year ago, The gear (soft metal) that slides outward to engage the hub is worn. Want to repair it? Forget it....just as the previous post said, Get ready to spend $300+ at the Ford dealer for the entire hub replacement because the gear cannot be purchased seperate. I'm looking into replacing the hubs with manual locking like my 84 Jeep CJ....reliable and always works.
Thanks Guys, I thought someone might know whats going on with these things. I would be very interested in manual hubs. Anyone Know where to get them? Thanks Agian "This Board Rocks"
Once again, I can help you answer that question. I'm looking into manual hubs myself. If you go to www.warn.com you'll find a link in there that will locate you a distributer by city and state.(warn is a manufacturer of aftermarket hubs) Hope this helps, Ryan.
