Question rough idle and sputtering running

i have an '88 eddie bauer b-II with 117k actual miles and up til about a month ago it ran fine. since then it sometimes idles rough and sputters/stutters when i drive it. some times it runs fine and other times it acts up again. i had the same prob w/ my nissan a few years back and all it took to fix it was to scrape the contacts on the distributor cap. i tried this on the old b-II and helped some but it's still not the ol' b-II i've come to know and love.
what's my route to fixing this; tune up, new fuel filter, new pcv valve, new o2 sensor or what? has anyone else had this problem? thanks for all reads and replies!!

I find that the first step in diagnosing driveability problems on the 2.9 is to run the EEC-IV self-tests (otherwise known as pulling the codes). It won't always point you to the problem, but it often does.
If you've never done this before, let me make some suggestions. There are instructions for the self-tests in the "technical information" posts under EEC-IV self-tests or something like that. Note that there are two different tests, and three different types of codes. It is important in diagnosing codes to not only note the code number, but to also note which type of code each is (KOEO, KOER, continuous memory), as well as which portions of test yielded pass (11) codes.
If there are tune-up items that your BII is due for, get those done.
The other basic diagnostic test is to test the fuel pressure. Ken00 has also posted instructions for testing the fuel pressure in the technical information post.
That's where I'd start.
