Disassembling Dana Automatic-locking Hubs
The idea is to substitute the plastic factory center caps on the rear OEM alloy wheels with dummy (gutted) factory automatic locking hub casings. I realize there'll be some machining required to fit them over the ends of the axles, and get them to fully seat down onto the brake drums. The benefits in trying this, I feel are worth the trouble.
My question has to do with removing the hubs internal parts. I've removed all the spring clips and snap rings I can find, and have removed all but what looks like one part. The splined cylinder, held in by a ball bearing at the outer end of the hub assembly, still resists being removed. I'm trying to avoid damaging the hub casing by hammering on it or clamping it in a vise.
Is there something I'm missing here, or is just that certain parts are pressed into place, and to remove them are just going to require some persistance and patience? So far, I'm at a loss to find out how these hubs are assembled. I'm hoping that someone who visits this forum may be able to offer some suggestions or useful information.
Thanks!
