Engine Question
I'm planning to install a 390 motor in a 1966 Ford F 250,which originally had a 360 motor (which thru the #3 connecting rod) It was given to my by a good friend and has been running good till the front seal went out and caused a oil leak. The question at hand is how is the motor /trans swap going to effect the rear end gearing?
Shouldn't have any effect on gearing. You may have to cut your driveshaft and have it re-balanced. I did the same swap. No effect. I did swap out the pumpkins to find the right balance that I wanted but no worries for your swap.
360/390 will not require any cahnges in the rear end gear. Most parts from the 360 will fit the 390. The front oil seal is likley caused by wear on the crankshaft spacer. When you buy the new seal ask for a "speedy sleeve". The sleeve slips over the spacer and provides a new surface for the seal. The leaking front seal is not a big deal at all. I would however go through the 390 before you install it and the budget would determine what you do. At the minimum, install a new set of bearings, rear main seal, high volume oil pump and a new timing chain and gears. You will be this far in the engine to replace the front seal (you are going to ruin the oil pan gasket when you remove the front cover) so might as well toss in bearings when you have the pan off to replace the gasket. At least replace the timing chain! Post back we like to see how these projects come out! Welcome to FTE!
The 390 and the 360 are from the same engine family. the difference is the stroke they are both FE engines and the parts are interchangeable you can bolt the old transmission up to the new engine. with no problems.
