I have a 99 Explorer Limited which claims to monitor fuel usage but cannot determine how much fuel is being consumed. Ford dealer claims 10% /- is the best they can do. My truck comes up with numbers ranging from 22% low to 2% high. Naturally this makes all calculations which follow (MPG, Miles to empty, etc) useless. Any help out there ? Ford looked at this twice and claims the unit is within their specs. Thanks for any help.
Just so you don't feel alone, the 2000 Limited that I bought 2 months ago has a problem with the truth too. I'm averaging 18% difference from calculated by hand values. I have had NO response from FORD. And "what's the point of having the fancy computer console" if it can't get even close (VENTING)
I suspect the values are calculated off of RPMs and Odometer readings, thus the inaccuracy. "IF" they were using a mass flow meter or some other soffisticated peice of equipment then they could adjust it. Since they can not, I conclude that the console is a "SHOW PIECE" and I should have bought the XLT again!
I have a '96 Eddie Bauer and it's pretty accurate. One thing I would try to do is to reset the computer (disconnecting the battery) to see if it helps any. Look in the owners manual to see if there's any other info about the computer. I hope this helps.
