if its like my 04 and most ford radio's then No,, there should be 2 holes on each side on the front of the radio, if you have ford radio tools then just put then in these holes and the radio will pull right out,, most auto parts or car audio shops will sell them,, if not you can use allen wrenches, use 4 that are close to the size of the holes.. insert then about 2 inches and push then away from the radio and pull out on them,, the radio should come out,,
Rich, you don't "HAVE TO" remove the dash panel to remove the stereo, but it actually saves time and makes the install a cinch. There's only a few plug-ins that need to be removed and re-attached, so it's not that bad of an endeavor. Once you get the dash panel unsnapped from the dashboard, you don't necessarily have to remove it all the way off. You can work on replacing the radio with the dash panel just pulled away from the dashboard. Oh yeah, and remember to hook up the antenna plug to the back of the stereo before you button it all up. Been there, done that! Dowt!!!
Taking the front of dash out isn't necessary. If you dont have a radio tool coat hangers are perfect. Most of the newer dashes pull right off, though I have never removed my super duties
I thought there was a screw the had to be removed after the radio was out to pull the dash. I may be wrong on that. I used the removal tool and had to work the radio for a minute but it did come loose. Putting the new unit in was a snap.
I'm buyng a pioneer and will have to install a cage so it fits the Ford. I'm wondering if the cage can be installed without the dash coming out. Question about the tool. When you insert it I'm assuming it pushes on something to trigger a release. If that's the case I'm wondering if I can use some nails.
My '04 has 2 screws above the radio that holds the dash on in that area. once you get the radio out, the screws are directly above where the radio was. Then the dash just pops off, but be careful there are just spring clips on plastic tabs that are mounted on the dash panel and I ended up breaking off one tab that was by the steering column and I was very careful. Luckily it doesn't rattle.

There isn't really a "trigger release" More of a tension clip that has to clear the sides of the framing. When you insert the tools only put them in about 1.5" and like said before, you want to press out so that the clips squeeze on the sides of the radio. Don't know if I really painted a picture, clear as mud?
The cage you're speaking of will more than likely require the dash out. When I did mine, I had to. It came with two screw holes to secure the cage in the factory holes. For some reason when I screwed it in, nothing matched up right again. I ended up breaking off the fasten points from the cage and putting the dash back together, then sliding the cage w/head unit together in the hole. It's not screwed in, but fits nice and snug. I've never had any problems with it moving or falling out or anything, perfect fit. Check my gallery to see the pics of the unit and dash. If someone really wants to steal it, screwing it in is only gonna take them another minute to do, if they're being careful to begin with.

I installed a Kenwood in mine. I didn't have to remove anything but the radio. The adapter kit that i got didn't require any screws. It had one bracket that you screw to the back of the radio thatlets the rear or the radio slide on the factory rail. Then the trim ring has clips that snap it into place. Hope this helps.
