I have a 3 spd auto '86 F-250. I read about people putting in overdrives with manual transmissions, can I put one in mine? Would be nice to roll down the highway at lower rpms.
On the subject of transmissions, how do I know which one I have (c4,c5,c6), and what's the difference?

You probably have a c6, it should be located on your door. Does your truck sound and feel like it needs to shift again at 65mph? I need OVERDRIVE! Was hoping there was a quick, easy fix?
the c-6 was put behind the diesel engines. beefed up internal parts to handle the higher torque and power. You should be able to get an overdrive from gear vendors. You will have to shorten the drive shaft. It will work on the rear wheel drive and the 4x4. try a internet search for gear vendor (s). they are located in california. I had one on my 88 and it worked very well. It allows a 22% reduction in engine speed in all gears. They shift like a standard (selectable) or set it to shift automatically.
Reading your post, I am not sure if you mean swapping a 5 speed manual with overdrive with your existing C6 or if you are talking about adding a brownie trans.
Either one can be done. A brownie trans is a manual, 3 or 4 speed that gives you deep under, under, direct and overdrives. It mounts behind the existing trans, can be used with either manual or auto trans.
Under and overdrives by either Gear Vendor or U.S Gear work very well.
Swapping in a 5 sp. overdrive can be pretty expensive. You have to change the flywheel, bellhousing, buy the clutch, tranny and linkages whether they be hydraulic or use the old style rods. You could also swap in an E4OD auto and use aftermarket electronic box (computer) to shift the trans properly.
I have a Gear Vendor OD in an 86 F250 4x4, 4:10 gears, cummins 5.9 and C6 auto. Still needs another overdrive cuz it's wound tight at 78 mph. I don't want to loose the low end torque by changing the gear ratio because of the load I pull. 27 ft 5th wheel, 21 ft boat or the 5th wheel and trailer with 4 wheelers.
Mostly it depends on what you want to use the vehicle for and how deep your pockets are.
