thanks
U.S.M.C stuck in southern cali.....
hey now, be nice....mini trucks need love too... the s10 stock comes in at little more then 3000, but i've cut alot of metal off and add'd some aswell, no more then 3500. and will be using a uhaul transport. i think i have the 3:08 gears and have asked and wrote letters and emails to the dealership about upgrades , but no replys are ever returned. thank you for the welcome and the reply, good to know im not the onlyonestill awake.
The U-haul trailers seem to pull well but I think that with 3.08s you're going to be working the 4.2 pretty hard. I guess the best would be to hook it up and see what it tows like. Changing to some 3.73s or something similar would probably make quite a difference.
Hopefully some people that have towed with their 4.2s will come along and give us some more insight.
I pulled a tandem axle Uhaul trailer from Alabama to North Carolina and had 3200 lbs on it. It was a move and I had to weigh the empty truck and trailer and then weigh it full to get the total load for reembursement. Well the truck, trailer and load were right at 8,500 lbs so you guys that know what an F150 weighs can figure out the weight of the trailer. I have a 2000 2wd single cab 4.6 auto with 3.08 gears and it was a long, hard, headache of a haul. I also noticed a difference with my fathers bass boat when I pulled it. He has a 98 Silverado (I know!) with the 350 vortec auto and 3.55 gears and he could pull it with ease in overdrive. I couldn't get out of third gear with it with my truck. So if you have the extended cab which will add even more weight than my truck you will need much lower gears or a 5.4 engine! You will probably severely decrease the trucks life if you go farther than statewide. Also, get an auto transmission. People on here say the manuals are weak and come out of the Mazda. If I had the manual I probably wouldn't have made it I would have burnt something up.
William,
I hate to chime in with this but I will, I'm afraid you bought a really nice truck but (in some sense) was sold a bill of goods by the salesman.
He assured you it would do the job? How did he know? I'll bet he never asked about MGVWR, MCWR or total weight of what you will be towing. Did he even mention that you were getting 3.08 rear end?
The 4.2 could suffice (IMO) if you have the heavy duty package and -at the worst - 3.55 rear end.
I suspect you will get hammered trying to pull long hills with your set-up. If you get stuck trying to start off on a moderate grade, with that much weight and a 3.08 rear end, I'd expect you'd smoke the clutch pretty quick.
Hey, I have a 4.2 and love it. It pulls my motorcycle trailer, and other misc items - up to about 3,000 lbs quite nicely. But, I'd hate to task it with 4K lbs headed cross country!
Is it new or used?
As mentioned above, get 3.73 gears and I'd replace stock shocks with some heavy duty ones.
You, and your truck, have your work cut out for you, at least IMO.
thanks brian,
its bad news, but its what i expected... the salesmen took advantige of my wife and i, but i let it happen. no worries....thanks for everyones input.
