My 2000 4.6 blows blue smoke on start up maybe twice a week. I have extended warranty and took her in on Monday. They kept the truck until Thursday, called me to come and get her. Since it didnt smoke for them they more or less told me to beat it. They started her every morning and saw nothing. This morning I started my truck, blue smoke for at least 10 seconds. Any advise would be appreciated.
switch to a 5w30 motor oil. Some of the newer trucks are having blowby with the 5w20, some do some don't. Mine was doing it with 5w30 mobil1 oil, so I went to 0w30 german castrol which is a thick 30 weight, and it never did it since then.
If thats the case, what am I going to do with a case of 5w30 mobil 1 oil. Would changing weight affect my warranty? Would 0w30 be OK in the winter? I live in Canada and it gets really cold.
If your car is still under warranty then you should use the recommended oil. I'm just saying that I solved it by going to a thicker 30 weight oil in german castrol 0w30.
0w30 is a good all around oil for this vehicle, it only acts like a 0 weight during startup in freezing conditions and it provides fast startups. When it warms up its a thick 30 weight oil.
I guess you could park it outside the service department overnight, and then in the morning go get the service manager and you can start it up in front of him and let him see it for himself. JH6 indicated his was doing it with the mobil1 oil, so if thats what you are using maybe try one change with the recommended Motorcraft 5w20 and see if it improves.
I took my truck in Monday and they started it up every morning till Thursday. It didnt smoke for them. Friday morning it smoked for me. Of all the rotten luck. Anyways, If 5w30 is a thinner oil then 10w30, wouldnt 0w30 be even thinner? That weight wouldnt help me. Thanks for your replys though.
How many miles on this truck??? We see high mileage 4.6s in Crown Vics with this concern and it is usally valve seals bad.Use only recommented oil weights when any warranty is still intake.DO NOT USE HEAVY WEIGHT OIL IN MODULAR ENGINES---PERIOD!!!!!! Newer 4.6 & 5.4s all use 5w-20.(printed on oil cap) earlier years 5w-30.I work for a FORD dealer(27 years)and first I would like to see a maint. history, do a good visual of truck, check for bulletins and TSBs, talk to other Techs.- get their opinions. Leaving truck overnight is a must! Cust being there at start up would make our jobs easier (very seldom convin. or happens at all) Hope you are a reg. cust- def. makes a diff. Hope you are not a warr. nearing end cust (with EASY CARE-field rep. will be sent for repair approval-they tell you to tear down, and if they will not warrant repair- cust. MUST pay!!!)Good Luck and Hope I helped in some way- not scared you!!!!
The miles are only 31000 KM or about 20,000 miles. The truck smoked at 4000 KM the first time. I bought the 7 year warranty when the truck was new in 2000. They gave me a free oil change without even asking what type of oil I use, and sent me away. They also said Ford engineers said a little smoke is normal. Would video tapeing my truck smoke, help me prove my point? Thanks for any replies.
NO! You there with a tech and service manager is the best way to resolve this. You are in base warranty anyways- I'm not there so I can't say norm or not but opinions vary from non techs to non techs as tech to tech!!! Ford wants you to be happy with your Ford- they are willing to do anything to correct it IF!! it is considered NOT NORMAL TO THE REST OF 2000 F-150s. Hot line always ask tech Do you think this is normal or not???Last resort is to call cust # in owner's man.(remember you will be talking to a pencil pusher who probably doesn't know a cigar lighter from a piston-but will agree with everything you tell them,Ford wants you happy)Your dealer will then be notified(might not be happy about it) and will be getting in touch with you. Hope they help you or satify you in some way- I like for you to stay in a Ford also. GOOD LUCK (from down in Va.)
We usually do care since we all are driving about the same vehicle and like to know what is going on with em.
TruBluFords is right about the customer care number. I had an issue with an old Bronco about 3 yrs ago where a recall notice was not sent to the owner cause they couldn't figure out who owned it. It was an issue with the brake system I believe. I found out about it and the part required to be replaced had not been done. I called the customer service # after the dealer pretty much told me $400 or beat it. I got a call about 4 days later from the dealer telling me to bring it in so they can take care of it. They do want us to like our Fords.
