Frog-
My research indicates that the 300 came into being in 1965 until the mid 1990's possibly 1995. Quite a run I must say. (I own one). Yes there were 300's with EFI. I am pretty sure they came out in the 80's in broncos and pickups. Not sure of the exact date. Hope this helps.

the 300 started in 1965 with a run until 97/8. it was used and may still be used in industrical/agriculture equipment, generators, etc...EFI started in 1987 in the redesigned f-150. they 300 was also used in the E-series vans and F-series trucks up to F-700?

Nope, i have to disagree. 1996 was the last year in the F-150, they were used in F2/350s until the introduction of the SD in either 97 0r 98.

Is it true though that the motor was originally designed by White? It definitely runs different then most gasoline engines of similar size. As my brother puts it with the lower rpms and higher torque lower in the curve it is essentially a gas motor that thinks it is a diesel.

it has to do with several factors, one being the longer stroke and all inline 6s are naturally more torqie then a V style. also the low RPM has to do with the head design, cam profile, etc...

Inline engines of the 6 and 8 cylinder kind, such as the 300 with its long stroke, were first used in farm implement/ tractor applications and other industrial uses. It's all due to their high torque output on gasoline. First engine I ever rebuilt was a straight 8 from a Case tractor for our church youth group coordinator when I was 14.

I read in a much older post back in the 400s though the 240/300 was designed by White Tractor Co. and I can't believe that is true. I wish someone could substantiate that. If so my friends who pick on my truck for sounding like a tractor, I can finally just laugh and say yep.

This is of course the Ford-Truck forum but it does make me wonder about the roots of other large six cylinders such as the 292 and 302 GMCs.

The 300 I6 was originally an International tractor engine. Ford bought the patent rights in the late 50's/early 60's.

I've never heard that the I6 was designed by anyone else other than Ford. So i can't really say either way really. I'd like to know either way who built this legendary engine.

My fingers are crossed that Ford built this themselves, but either way, it wouldn't keep this engine from being my favorite.

PS: I emailed Ford, to ask about the creation of the 300, and any info they had relating to it. I'll post back with more information later.

I know that it started out as the 240 mhg. Thanks for the reiteration. International Harvester is an interesting possibility. So instead of Ford F-150 Ranger, it should be Ford F-150 Farmall Cub? ha ha ha

Do a search a year or two back. The White thing was talked about some. Last I recall, it was said to be not true. Last week I found a file on my computer with some info on the white connection and early 1964 sales. Probably from one of those posts. If I remember I will (re-)post it tomorrow when I get to the office.
