ok my straight axle is about to be put in but here is my dilemma, I know a dana 44 str8 axle can't mud 44" tsls, so what is the biggest tire that I can run on that front end? I'm considreing maybe buying a set of 37 inch boggers to play with in the mud and then use my 44's on the road... Would that work on a dana 44? That way I'd also feel safe maybe putting in alloy axle shafts ox ujoints etc in the front etc., cuz I'm not gonna beef up the 44 if its just gonna snap everytime i stick it in 4wd. My real reason for the sas anyway is just for a lil more flex, steering and control, and i can get about 3-4 more inches of clearance in the front and no front end sag.
some of the logic behind me going with the 44 was:
do i have tires big enough to need a 60? yes
would a 60 be cool? yes
do 99.9 percent of people know the diff in a 44 and a 60? no
do I really ever do that much mudding anyway? no
is a 44 cheaper than a 60? yes
here is the biggest factor tho,
do i have enough engine that even if i had a 60 that i could mud 44's: no
I have a 302 with headers, k+n filter and cold air, and true dual 2 1/2 inch str8's no cats no mufflers.
I couldn't dig 44's out of even not very deep mud
my truck is a daily driver and if i tried to beef that 302 up to like 400 hp I'd prolly get like 3mpg and I couldn't do that
Most seem to think 35s are the recommended max for a Dana 44. I think 37s are too large. There is a world of difference between a 35 and 37 compared to a 33 and 35. Especially in the weight department.
37s would probably be OK depending on your right foot and your axle is unlocked.
44s on the road with tear up your TREs, balljoints, and other expendable parts; not to mention that you'll get about 3mpg pushing those suckers up the road, and you won't have any power.
only you can decide how long your drivetrain will last against different sized tires! i have seen guys run Moad with 31" tires and rip everything out from under their trucks.....then again i have seen folks run 53" Michlins and the only thing he ever broke was a sweat trying to climb in his truck! lol
IMO, 35" max on a stock D44 with a light foot, 37" max with a beefed up d44 and a light foot. Like others have said, depends on how you abuse it, i've heard of people running 44's hard on D44's with luck, others snap them with 33's.
