I am a new member but have been lurking for a couple of months. I have gained a huge amount of knowledge in just these couple of months. Thanks. I have '99 F250 V10 4x4 CC long bed with manual transmission (82,000 miles). My OBD warning light has come on with an error of P0171 - Bank 1 to lean. I also recently (April) had a new head placed on the right side or passenger side of the engine. Blown spark plug out of cylinder 4. Wish I would have found this site prior to paying the dealer 1400.00 for the reman head. Live and learn I guess. The warning light came on about a month later after filling up at a California gas station while on vacation. I reset the computer and put AZ gas in once I got home thinking it was the CA gas? However, about a week later the warning light came on with the same code.
Questions:
1. Is Bank 1 the right or left head?
2. Could it be related to the new head?
3. It appears, ever since light came on I am getting better gas mileage, think this is related?
4. Mechanic I talked with states when running to lean, cylinder(s) could get hot resulting in damage, is this true?
5. Finally, what steps do I take to fix this problem (Cheapest solutions first)? Do I need to fix this problem?
Sorry a little long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

can be the following
1)dirty or faulty Maf(mass air flow sensor) located on air induction system 2) dirty or clogging fuel filter or injectors
3)air leaks in the intake system after the maf sensor ,intake manifold gaskets .
4)egr valve sticking
?1
?2 is it related to the new head ? could be the intake gasket -oring moved when he installed the head and just started leaking.
?3 that is possible because this code effects the fuel trims or curves to the engine.
?4)yes absolutly true ,burn holes through pistons (long term)
?5clean the maf and change the fuel filter (least expensive)
then look at the egr for sticking.
Then and intake chk with propane looking for intake leaks .
