Been looking at some threads on here about exhaust sounds but still not to sure what to try. I have a 04 6.0 with the banks 4" turbo back sys. on it and am not happy with the sound it has. i am looking for the semi truck with the load turbo whine sound out of mine. anyone have any ideas on how i can achieve this

What don't you like?

Alex,
I am curious as to what your current system sounds like? I am currently looking at exhaust systems and the Banks system was one of the front runners. What don't you like about it, and aside from that, how difficult was the installation? I have a late 2003 F250 Crew Cab Lariat FX 4x4.
I am truly interested in your answers.

John to me my truck sounds like a big v8 gasser when you step on it very little turbo whine.I have heard other ford trucks around town and they sound like semi trucks at idel and acceleration. Thats what i am looking to duplicate. As for the installation of my banks sys. I went through Banks in Azusa and had the six gun bundel installed with the turner and speed loader. I am very happy with the performance on setting 3 I can spin 35" mud terrian tires, it's just the exhaust sound that i want to change. hope this helps you out.

An 04 has a modified turbocharger, and no matter what, you can't get a tremendous amount of whine. So far out of the three settings Ive tried with a Hog system, (Straight Pipe, muffler with baffles back, muffler with baffles forward) I get the most turbo whine with the muffler turned to the max muffle side. This quietens down the V8 rumble and accentuates the turbo scream.

Just IMO

just put a 4inch pipe from the turbo all the way back with no cat or muffler this gives a loud turbo scream and it will hurt your ears and at high rpm it sounds like a gas at about 2000rpms thats when it starts to sound like a gasser and you hear the turbo until it hits 2000

This still only works on the 03's. I had mine straightpiped, no cat, no muffler, and NO turbo noise. Nothing but a gurgly V8. Ford did a great job of silencing the supposedly "annoying" whine...but I want it back.

I feel the same way. At first I was upset that my truck, with its newly-deleted pilot injection, was louder than my friend's Duramax. But the diesel sound has grown on me and now I find I'm loking for a way to get the semi-type, turbo-accentuated sound. But I keep running into the 03-vs-04 turbo thing, and it's getting frustrating. I guess I'll just have to enjoy the idle clatter. It's really quite nice once you get used to it.

To get the Big Diesel sound you have to go to a 3.5" downpipe, drop the cat and add a large diameter 5" to 6" pipe that exits in front of the rear wheel. This should get you plenty of noise.

I'm putting together (on paper for now) a very free flowing exhaust.
Starting from the turbo with a Banks downpipe, then its up to stainless 5" plumbing through a "T", then straight up in the air (through the bed) with twin 5" 45 degree angled stacks. Is the downpipe one piece all the way to the cat?
Anyone foresee any potential problems with this setup?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Wednesday, I stopped by local custom exhaust shop to see what miracles he may be able to perform on my '04 CC short bed PSD. Lo and behold there was an '03 up on the lift getting a complete turbo back 4" system. I wasn't in a great hurry so I stuck around to watch them work, and listen to what it sounded like when it was done.
While looking up from underneath, I noticed that the fuel tank almost completely fills the driver side opening between the frame and the bed. There is no way you would be able to T the pipes under the truck and bring the stacks up through the floor of the bed, unless you want the exhaust system to become you new skid plate..... You would have to come up through the bed on the passenger side and split into dual stacks inside the bed. CAT_Man_963 has pictures posted in his gallery of his very nice looking dual stack installation.

The '03 sounded awesome with 4" system including cat and muffler. Nice and noticeable turbo sound and very pleasing V8 sound at higher RPMs.

PSD 60L FX4 , are you saying that with my '04 that I won't get that same turbo whine that I heard on the '03 using that samw system? If so, that stinks.... and I don't know what to do about that....

The more free flowing your exaust is the less your turbo will whine. That is why as you mentioned in your earlier post about with max muffle you got the most amount of whine. You must be carefull about the selection of your components to get the desired effects sound, rumble, whine, and low egt's.
It was explained to me from a Ford master diesel tech that your exaust back presure must be higher than manifold pressure for the turbo to work its very best. I have a 04' build w/predator/mac air intake/stock exaust and it most certainly sounds like a big rig turbo.

I've heard there is a resonator in the downpipe of either the 03 or the 04 to lessen the whine...

but all I can tell you about it is my experience with my 03 6-oh...
stock no whine, no rumble, and high egt's... (and lot's of weight !)
tried muffler delete only at first... LOUD rumble - so loud no whine...
3.5" turbo downpipe to 4" pipes... no cat - great whine and sufficient rumble for me...
the muffler has a 4" flow thru design but still quieted down the too loud droan ...

Put the cat back in and it lessened the whine a bit with no loss of performance...

ANYTHING is better than stock... just listen to a bunch of them and try what you like...

I'm not so sure about that one. If your exhaust has 30-40 lbs of backpressure, you MAY have some serious issues. The only thing of similar effect I know of is that for the EGR to function correctly, the the backpressure must be greater than boost...

It will have some turbo whine; not as much as an 03. It has been rumored that the 04 turbo, along with the 3 extra vanes, has some sort of *silencer* ring on the outside of the bearings...this could be totally false, I just heard it somewhere...

My 04 CC long bed with hog performance 4" turbo back w/no cat sounds like a big rig/747 jet to me and has plenty of whine. The difference in whine between the 03's vs 04's that I have heard is a different pitch whine/whistle. The 03's tend to have a higher pitch whistle but make no mistake the 04's whisle/whine quite loud with a nice high RPM rumble.
