Raybestos QS (quiet stop ceramics) or Raybestos PG (semi-metallic). You must have 2WD as I understand that the '05 4WD models with 4 wheel disk brakes are relatively dust-free.
I have Wagner Thermo Quads on mine... Simi metallics I think.. They stop great, are quiet, and dust free...I put them on my 2004 at 3000 miles (I hated the dust on my nice wheels) P.S. you didn't say how many miles on your Escape. do it before you have many miles on it, or you will have to change the rotors too. If you have under 10k you probably can just change the pads..
I plan on going with the Raybestos QS but haven't decided upon which rotors but they won't be from the dealership...something has to be better than the soft factory rotors. My pads/rotors have lasted a long time but this is the first vehicle I've owned which requires rotor replacements when the pads are changed due to thinning so fast.
Mojave2k - do you know if they are still using the soft rotors on the 05s, both 2wd and 4wd?
I don't know if the new 05s with the 4 wheel disc's have improved rotors or not. They don't have the brake dust problem, (my neighbor has a new 05, no dust). I am betting that they are still using the same rotors though. They only changed the pads because of so many complaints on the dust issue.
The 2001-2004 originally came from the factory with semi-metallic pads. 2005 models have a ceramic base brake pads. The ceramic pads have taken the steel and iron out of the pads and replaced with ceramics. You will not get the black dust and will have quieter brakes with the ceramic pads. CARQUEST has ceramic pads available for 2001-2005. The part number is GCD843 for 2001-2004 and for the 2005, the number is BCD1047.
I've got a 2005 XLS 2WD and it has the same dusting issue as my 2002 Escape. Slightly less dust and it's bronze rather than black, but still a major dusting issue. I've heard the same as Mojave2k that the only decent pads they've used are on the 4 wheel discs of an XLT. I'll be upgrading rotors/pads to Raybestos PG Plus rotors and their ceramics when I tire of the dust. Same as my 02.
The dust, amazingly enough is not just a byproduct of the pads, but the stock rotors as well. My wifes 02 fwd xlt has 60k and I just did the brakes for the first time. Amazingly, the rotors had as much wear as the pads. There was a 4mm lip at the outermost edge of the rotor that was the original thickness. Both rotors, both sides. The rotors were so bad they were not even turnable, I had to replace them.....
