Reply/Question for rambunctious

Hi ram!

Found this thread after searching for info on the DVD/rail system for my new screw. Is the wiring harness available yet for the overhead DVD? I found one cheap, Ford OEM no less, and I want the harness so I can install it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Hey ram, noticed you are online. Got any pictures of the instal of the DVD in an 04? I saw in another forumm that you guys had done it. i call the dealer today and they are looking into getting the harness but the service guy said that he would be "breaking new ground" when it comes to instaling one. thought some pictures might help and/or if you can tell me how detailed/involved/difficult one is to install.

thanks again!

thanks for all the interest.

we are still working with Ford on the aftermarket harness release. I looked back at some of my posts regarding this and especially at the dates. it surprises me how long this is taking and I've been in this industry for 13 years !!!

to recap some of my other posts:
late 04's and 05's have dvd as a factory order option, 05's also have a "DVD prep kit" as a factory order option. this hareness lets you add dvd later as the harness is preinstalled in the headliner. for the small fee I would think that every dealer would check this box for teh potential of selling a dvd through their accessories department.

04's, (and the 05's without two above mentioned factory ordered options) will require the aftermarket harness we are working to release.

all i can say is we keep getting closer. Ford is working on the marketing plans to make sure the consumers know the product is available......once released..... so that should sound like good news right????

I will be all over the board when we finally get this deal closed as this has turned into a personal project for me.

P.S. Yes....... Johnson Controls

Thanks Ram!

I still would respectfully ask for a clarification of your response. You said in other posts that you guys (Johnson Controls) had installed a DVD in an 04, is that correct? If so what did you use? An 05 "DVD prep package" harness or somthing you guys are developing? What I am basically asking is that if my dealer orders an 05 DVD wiring harness, or a reasonable fascimile (SP?), how detailed/involved/difficult will it be? (and furthermore will it work)

Also thought some pictures might help them since they have not done one before. As you can surmise I am really excited about getting it installed in my screw.

thanks again for all your help! (and dealing with my quextions/excitment)

Iron chef,

we seem to be typing simultaneously... sorry if I am not answereing your Q's

We developed the appropriate hareness here at JCI.
we installed it in an 04 truck....MINE
we documented the process and have created an instruction manual
we will include this manual "in the box" with the harness once releases
I will try to post some of the pics from that install.

just fyi. we first setup a dvd to work with an fm modulator wired into the antennae lead, then an fm broadcaster. to compare in my truck
but all of the controls and interface with the radio did not exist with these methods. and anyone cannot do this to the factory dvd as our electrical engineers who launched the F150 dvd had to write a special software program and flash it to my dvd for this testing.

as i have mentioned on other threads, the ford radio system uses what is called CanBuss to communicate with the radio. that is why all other solutions require fm modulators.

Ok, so basically I will have to wait for the CanBuss harness/system if I want to run it directly through my radio. I have a winstar with a DVD/FM modulator combo now, I was just wondering that if the DVD prep package is available now as a factory installed option would it be possible to get that package through my dealer and run it directly through the radioith the overhead OEM DVD player I am purchasing.

You are answering my questions perfectly! I too think it is funny we are typing at the same time. i look forward to your response and pictures when posted.

thanks

I installed this Sony Dreamsystem DVD player on my rail system. I didn't have to drill or cut anything. I did have to run the Sony wiring harness though. It was pretty easy install. The mounting plate happens to fit perfectly between the rails. I just had to get longer screws to mount the player to the plate. PM for more detailed info. Check my gallery for pics. Good luck. JP

Well, just as long as it happens sometime, and we're not skipped or forgotten. Otherwise, I will have wished I checked the DVD option when I ordered the truck. At the time, I didn't think I would be doing much long-distance travelling with the truck. Now, I can see making enough trips that it's worth it to keep the kids occupied.

Maybe I am a little slow but is the factory DVD prep package for an 05 not a dealer orderable option? I would think that all it would involve is ordering the wiring harness from Ford, having the dealer drill a small hole in the headliner and snaking the wires down the rail radio. The reason I am so hasty to get the wiring harness is that I just won a OEM DVD player for 270.00 shipped on Ebay and I want to make sure it works.

There has got to be a way, besides am FM modulator, to make this work. (actually if anyone (ram?) knows how I could do an install with a modulator I would be happy with that until the canbuss harness comes out)

Hey ram, someone was asking about the 26 pin wiring diagram. Do you have that? I would be interested in seeing that so I can at least test my DVD player before the wiring harness comes out.

Thanks

Rambunctious - Question for you: Does the Audiophile CD6 radio require a software update to get it to acknowledge the addition of a factory DVD on the CAN-BUS? I have an 03 Expedition that I have added an 04 Audiophile and 05 DVD. I have correctly wired the DVD to the factory harness (with the help of the wiring manual) and the DVD operates normally but I cannot get the HU to respond to the AUX or Mode button. With headphones plugged into the RICP I can slightly hear the data bursts when the buttons on the RICP or DVD are pushed so I know that the protocol A and B wires are on the bus. It certainly acts like the HU software isn't programmed for the DVD communication. Any thoughts? You may be my last hope!!

Has anyone else added a factory DVD to their rig? Did you get the factory HU to recognize the DVD and does the audio fromt he DVD play through the HU?
