My wife was going to work this AM and the Excursion, '01 7.3L diesel, shutdown.
The "THEFT" light now blinks rapidly with either key.
The engine turns-over but never fires-up.
My mechanic hooked up to the diagnoistic port but couldn't establish communication with the computer.
He feels the ECM is cooked.
Has anyone else had this problem?
If so what kind of expense for parts and labor.
The 'X' has 90000 miles on the odometer.
Yes it has had the ECM and PCM replaced before I purchased it last year.
We have put 24,000 miles on the 'X' in 1 year.
A FORD tech has found a blown 30 amp fuse, to the PCM.
Still cannot communicate to the ECM with his equipment.
Someone has suggested the WATER in FUEL sensor has shorted and fed back thru the system.
Has anyone heard of this before?
Im wondering what he meant by connector boot? Most Ford PCM dont have a connector boot, but instead a plastic shield on the outside and a rubber insulator inside the connector that surrounds the pins. I have seen many PCM connectors with a small amount of moisture inside them that didnt cause a PCM failure, so I wouldnt write off the PCM automatically. Failure to communicate can be something as simple as a blown fuse, or a bad PCM relay, or any device on the DATA buss that is shorted out. I see by EVTM that there are two 30 amp fuses, one to the PCM relay and one to the IDM relay. I would make sure these relays are good and also the PCM diode and ensure there are no other wiring shorts.
Thanks for the info.
I will send my tech a copy of the last response.
He also indicated that 2 of the pins were blackened.
Looks like when he gets everything fixed the X will have to go back to the dealer to reprogram the PATS system.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
The dealer finally got around to checking on my X.
The tech said he put the key in the ignition and the $%#@&^% thing started with no problems.
They could not find anything wrong.
Go figure.
I know the truck blew 3 fuses with the ECM plugged up.
With the ECM unplugged no blown fuses.
I trust my tech, he and his father have had a diesel repair business for 20+ years.
Could the connector have worked loose at the ECM and caused the system to short?
