Who out there knows how to do this? I have not had the time to take my X in to see what failed in my reverse sensor. I believe strongly, that it is the switch in the dash.
I want to go buy the part from the dealer and replace it myself, but am unsure how to get it out.
Has anyone ever been into the dash in this area? This square section appears to be seperate from the rest of the dash, has the 4X4 round selector ****, that I assume pulls off, and has the defroster and reverse off/on switch in this square section. Since it is recessed, not sure how to go about pulling on it to remove it?
Hope someone knows this one?
Remove the parking aid switch trim plate by gently prying the plate out of the instrument panel.
Remove the parking aid switch.
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the parking aid switch, rear defrost switch (if equipped) and transfer case control switch (if equipped).
Release the locking tabs that retain the parking aid switch to the switch plate.
Remove the parking aid switch from the switch plate.
Just an update to the reverse warning system. I had my X in for repair of a faulty 4X4 module and while there, I asked them to diagnose the reason why my reverse warning system was not working correctly. I had replaced the dash switch back when I was posting this and it did not fix the problem.
They diagnosed and said it was the right rear outermost sensor that was defective and didn't have any in stock.
Long story short, I told them I would order it and do the replacement myself since it was a simple unplug and replace.
Found that the part they didn't think that they had in stock was actually the small housing that the switch goes in to. The parts guy and I both had a problem figuring it out, but based upon price, I knew this sensor was about $70 or so and the part number they were going to order was only $28 so I thought something was wrong. I called around and got a part number for the sensor, then called my dealer back, gave them the part number and they finally saw why they were not able to find the part on the diagram. The photo was showing the sensor so far up on the top of the screen, it was not obvious. They had the part in stock after all, so I took it.
I replaced it and that was the problem!
Back in business now! Next time, I will just go buy one and replace them one at a time until I find the bad one before I end up paying for diagnostics. I didn't have to pay this time since it was still under warranty. The part cost is the same as the warranty minimum, so it wouldn't be beneficial to pursue a warranty repair if anymore go bad.
To RobertH, what made you conclude it is the switch on the dash. My "parking aid" just up and quit working, the light on the dash switch shows "OFF" all of the time. I have got it to work 1 or 2 times by hitting the dash switch. Any thoughts would be great, I have a 2000 limited 4WD, Gas.
Thanks!
billspight, it was not the dash switch. My dash switch was doing the same thing yours was, sometimes it was showing off, other times not lit at all. That was the simplest and cheapest attempt to fix myself. I think that switch was approx. $15.
Must be feedback to the switch when the sensor's go bad, so try getting a sensor and changing them one at a time until you figure out which one it is. If it is not the sensor, I did see another post a long while back where the control unit was bad. If not under warranty, I think it was approx. $500 for the control unit per the post I read.
