Do Air Filters Really Help????

I'm wondering if air filter up grades really make a difference as far as noticeable power. If so what are the best kind to get? I've got the 5.4L 2004 FX4.

some people say they do, others say they dont. i have had better experience with a cold air intake rather than the drop in filter replacement. my experience is that the air boxes work well in conjunction with a chip. just my opinion.
