dash dissassembly

I have a 99' F-150 supercab and I need to replace the abs mobule which is located in the dash somewhere behind the steering wheel. The book I have recommends taking the whole dash apart. However, the piece of dash above the steering wheel connected to the instrument panel appears to be a separate piece from the rest of the dash. Can i just take apart the left side of the dash only to get at the abs module?

Hi canucker and welcome to the forum

The ABS module is under the top of the dash, in the middle. If you pop out the football shaped cover on the top of the passenger's side of the dash it is on the far left. You can see part of the connector and that's it.
To replace it you need to remove the big trim piece on the front/top of the dash.

canucker,

Just curious why you think you need to replace the module...did you get a specific error code?

Cheers, Wm.

The dealership read the codes and said that it was the abs module. Is the big piece (#2 on Diagram) the part that just goes past the radio? My concern is taking apart the right side of the dash because of the passenger side airbag.

Oops I guess that wasn't a very helpful picture. The piece in the picture is the part around the instrument cluster. That and the trim piece around the radio come off and then the big part on the top of the dash comes off.
You dont have to do anything with the airbags. Remove a battery terminal anyway and that kills the power to them so you dont have to worry
There are quite a few screws to remove for the piece in the picture and the big piece. The piece around the radio just pulls off. Turn the vents in so you can stick your fingers in the vent holes and pull it off.
There is a screw you have to remove that's behind the headlight switch. To get the switch out you turn the lights to the on position and pull the **** out. When it's pulled out you stick a thin tool, such as a pick, in the bottom of the ****, opposite the arrow that shows where the switch is pointing, to release the ****. You then turn the **** 180 degrees and reinstall it. Turn the **** to the off position and then back on and pull out the switch. It's easier than it sounds

Not difficult at all. I did it a few months back. I'll tell you what I can remember. Just start from the left side of the dash and start disassembling screws. When you get to the middle of the dash, you should be able to lift up on dash enough to remove abs module(2 screws and wiring connector). Pop out the center section on top of dash. It will help with more light. Sorry if this sounds vague, but i did it a few months ago. Just start removing screws from the left and it will be almost self explanitory. Just remember where the screws go. There will be 8 or 10 I think. I explained this in a post back when I did it. Maybe you can look for it.

The rabs module is pretty easy to get at. What you have to do is remove the snap on cover around the top of the steering wheel, remove the cover around the radio(it snaps off also). Remove bolts on the right side of instrument cluster, You'll be able to see which ones need removed. Then remove bolts around radio area. You'll be able to tell which ones here also. About 7 total. Then lift up dash and you will be able to see it. Remove the two bolts holding it in. Pull it forward a little and that will give you plenty of room to unplug it. I replaced mine and that wasn't the problem. This is from the earlier post I spoke of
