roof racks

The roof racks on my 98 explorer have loosened. It appears that the inserts (into the roof sheet metal) have become loose. Has anyone dealt with this? The dealer says they've never seen this before (for whatever that's worth).

The 6 mm nutserts usually don't loosen up. Were you trying to remove the screws holding the rack? If so, then they will come loose. The screws have a sealant to prevent loosening and water leakage. You need to use a sharp twist to break the sealant.

I know this because I patented the Raqdaptour Sport Rack. My designs were stolen my Yakima as their Railrider, and Thule by their Trackers. US Patent No. 5,810,226; 5,535,930; 5,499,762; 5,314,104; 5,201,911.

LAST EDITED ON 04-Jun-01 AT 09:41 AM (EST)[p]Doug,
The leading nut loosened up on the highway, presumably due to wind buffeting the cargo. I did remove the roof track on one side to see how the track was mounted. The dealer suggested that I try tightening the insert (presuming it was like a drywall-type insert). When I tried to tighten it, the insert came loose. Now I have a real problem. The mounting screw is tight in the insert, and the insert is loose in the roof. The dealer says they don't know how to fix it. I really don't know what the insert looks like on the underside. Any suggestions? I use the roof racks quite a bit and I'm anxious to solve the problem. I know Yakima has a PlusNut system which may be similar, but I have to remove the current insert first. HELP!!!

The only way to get the screw and nutset out is to use a drill and drill the screw head off. Once the track is off, you can drill out the screw and the nutsert. Or, use a die grinder to grind the nutsert/screw out of the roof panel. E-mail me @ douglapd(No Email Addresses In Posts!), your address or phone # and I'll sent you some nutserts and a tool to replace the damaged nutserts.
