There was a one paragraph article in today's local paper about a lawyer pushing the Federal Courts for a recall on all Explorers. Anyone have more info on this?
Alan , I believe its Firestone saying the Explorer is a faulty design , the whole tire deal , & Ford saying Firestones tires are to blame . Its a feeding frenzy for lawyers , they will be arguing this for yrs to come . In the end , the people that purchase either product will be the ones left wondering . At this point whoever is to blame has silently fixed whatever was wrong & will deny any wrong doing in the future . Ive driven Explorers thru all but the latest generation & they are no more hazardous than any other vehicle . Its the way some people drive them that make them hazardous . As for Firestone tires , I think their overall quality went downhill yrs ago ...I recall the tires they made in the early 80's for Ford ... Those things were going to pieces in less than 10K miles . The lawyers will sift thru it all & in the end we still wont have a definite answer
I have a 91 xlt and a 98 xlt. The front suspension systems are totally different on the two vehicles, so I don't see how Firestone's claim that there is a design flaw in the steering can hold. I don't believe there is anything wrong or substandard in either system. Both my vehichles drive and handle well.
Does anyone have any stats on the years of the Explorers with Firestone/rollover problems? Is the newer design the one with the most incidences?
By the way, why does the 1990 date keep coming up for Explorers? The first model was a 1991, although it may have been produced in 1990.
I wish wifey hadn't tossed the paper. The implied jist of the story is that they are pushing for a buy-back recall and not a "fix-it" recall. I bought a '91 Explorer in about '93 and put over 90k without any problems at all. I gave it to my mother a few years ago and it's still running strong. I have a feeling this all boils down to Firestone trying to save face.
Id say thats a large part of it ... Have you noticed the ads Firestone is running lately , About how they are the new & improved Firestone . Its really a shame because the people that work at Firestone , the ones that actually make the money for the company will be the ones that get the green weiner if all this litigation shows Firestone tires were the major cause of the problems .
I once again find it very interesting when i saw a picture of an explorer upside down with the words "another firestone rollover" and in the picture you can see that the tires say michelin on the sidewalls. Now i'm not saying Firestone has no fault because i do believe they could have been faulty. Also i think Ford is also partially to blame. Anyone who changes tires knows that you inflate tires to what the sidewalls state. Ford said 26psi which would help for a better ride. Well if the tires were inflated to 30-35psi this would have been a lesser problem. I would also like to tell you about my firsthand experience with michelin tires. My dad bought a F-250HD new in '95 that was equiped with Firestone tires. After being used on our farm hauling loads and pulling trailers the tires were replaced at 62,000 miles. Not bad! Then he put two like new michelins on the back of it which were on another truck of ours. One day he was going about 45 MPH and the right rear tires came apart causing damage to the side of the bed. The one on the left side was developing a problem also. So the truck got new Firestones again.
